Hello, I greet you from Argentina. I wanted to hear opinions about the sierra sport master bullet in 165g for hunting wild boar and deer. I await your answers, thanks

Ballester molina

Here in Argentina it is the only bullet I can get, and in this country the hunting is with a rifle and I want to start hunting with a glock 20 and a vortex razor, the powder I am going to use is long shot

I imagine it will work just fine for deer.

I don't know what kind of hogs you have in Argentina, but in the U.S. we have both armor plated and non armored hogs.  Most guys have only shot the latter and have no idea what I'm talking about.  Against an armored hog, that bullet is going to flatten out like a lead nickel when it hits the shoulder area.  You will have about 4 inches of penetration at best.

Hi, Tony. Here we have the European wild boar, an adult male can weigh a maximum of 90kg and its coat is thick and hard, generally with a mud shield. sadly you can't get hornady xtp tips, I read that it's a favorite for hunting

blaster

for those kind of boars, I would use a hard cast or full metal jacket bullet weighing about 200 grains. you need  get through that armor and an expanding bullet by its design, won't pernitrate as far as a solid bullet.
since you seem to have limited bullet availability, have you ever though about casting your own bullets?

Ballester molina

Hello blaster. Thank you very much for your advice. I throw my bullets for 9mm, 38 special, .45acp, 40 s & w. i have a mold reads tl-401-175g-swc. you oppose that I can join that boolit to hunt? I generally use water cooled wheel weights

sqlbullet

That 175 TL SWC is a bullet I cast and it will get the job done if you cast it hard and load it up to 1300 fps or so.  Added velocity past that is possible, but increases the probably the bullet will fragment rather than penetrate.

If you can get your hands on a 200 gr WFN style mold, that would be better, but sometimes you gotta use what you have.

blaster

hi Ballester molina, yes the 175 will work. take sqlbullet's advise and cast them hard and don't push them too fast.
what brands of powder do you have in Argentina? not that it makes much difference, I am just curious. actually I have many questions about gun ownership and hunting in other Countries. especially Argentina. I have a good friend from Argentina but he is not a firearm enthusiast so I can't get much answers from him. do you have to go through a lot of Gov't paperwork to own guns? can any Citizen own guns? is hunting easy to do there? is there "open" land where any one can hunt? or is it on private land only? I have heard of North Americans booking hunting trips in Argentina but I would like to know about hunting for the local people.

hello blaster, good morning, it's 10 am here. With respect to the powders that are obtained today in Argentina the variety is very limited, for short weapons there are only w231 and longshot, and then those of military manufactures that are widely used and with excellent results. With regard to the possession of weapons, to be able to have a weapon you have to justify a lawful livelihood, pass a psychophysical exam, and not have a criminal record. To hunt here you can organize with a preserve, which is a superficially delimited private place in which you pay for their services and you can also get permits from individuals who let you hunt on their lands without any economic cost, you always leave part of I hunted it as a thank you.

It's always interesting to hear how gun ownership is in other countries.

It's amazing how much freedoms we actually have in the US as compared to the rest of the world, at least regarding Guns and stuff.

Yes Mike D, here in Argentina we can have semi-automatic loading weapons, only pistols and shotguns, large caliber, full auto is not allowed and semi-automatic heavy caliber rifles can only be had under decree

Ballester molina

Well, to finish this topic, I need to be guided with some load for the 165gr. Sierrasport master bullet and for the boolit tl-401-175gr with long shot powder. the pistol is a glock 20 with a factory barrel

Speer doesn't list any load data online for the sport master bullets but the data below should work.

I don't know what bullets you are asking about on the latter part of your question.

The Sierra reloading manual doesn't list longshot for the 165 grain bullet. It's lists a maximum charge of 6.4 grains of Win 231 for 1050 fps out of a 5 inch barrel. If you go to hodgdonreloading.com, they have online load data for the 180 grain Sierra which does list longshot. You can extrapolate from there for the lighter 165 grain bullet.

My Lyman cast bullet handbook does not list longshot for a 175 grain cast bullets (Lyman #401043 and Lyman #401638). It does list Win 231 for maximum charge weights of the Lyman bullets above as follows: max charge weight of 6.7 grains and max charge weight of 6.5 grains with velocities out of a 5 inch barrel of 1189 fps and 1181 fps. Again, you could go to hodgdonreloading.com and extrapolate from their 180 grain Sierra bullet loads. Win 231 is pretty anemic for full power loads with either bullet you are going to use. Hope this helps.
