According to one of my guns stores, which happens to be the oldest and largest in Central Ohio where I live, the primary causes of the shortage is demand COMBINED with the fact that many of the factories shut down in the early days of the pandemic and just can't catch up.

Does this sound right to you?

Yeah.

5+ million first time gun owners plus increased demand across the board coupled with diminished supply and delays restocking suppliers would cause shortages. If I recall correctly many states didn't initially consider firearm and ammo manufacturers to be "essential businesses".

That and many folks who would normally be spending money going to movies, eating out, and enjoying other hobbies now have the ability to buy guns and ammo with that money instead - both for the gun hobby and because of panic buying in the face of the shortages.

It'll take a while for things to balance out again.
"The meek shall inherit the Earth" is a mistranslation. Properly translated it would say: "Those who have swords and know how to use them, but keep them sheathed, shall inherit the Earth". Carry every day.

And that five million number underestimates the impact on ammo.  I know just as many people who had previously purchased a firearm after the last "run" but had neglected to buy ammo for said gun.  I probably get 4-5 texts each week asking if $0.80/round for 9mm is a good price.

Yeah, the few products out there are so over-marked up it is absurd!

Well I can see the run on guns and bullets but how about reloading supplies? What is the reason for no primers or powder? I was trying to buy 40 cal FMJ bullets and not only were they out of those but they were out of all 40 cal projectiles. You would think the manufactures would rent some warehousing space and load it up. No instead they run out of stuff to ship in a week. You would think they would learn.  Craig

The current gun panic is nothing new. I'm assuming this is your first experience amidst a gun panic ? I started gaining serious usage of guns back around 2010. The Sandy Hook incident caused an insane gun panic back around 2013 . I had nothing for ammo inventory, and I did not reload at the time. I had to pay $74.99 online for a brick of 22LR . That was the one and ONLY time I took it in the rear to buy ammo. Today deeply vested into handloading and bullet casting i'm sitting on about 86,000 rounds worth of reloading components, and about 900# of lead that I achieved through small bi-weekly purchases as my funds allowed. Far too many gun owners react with fear and impulse at the slightest political unrest, and you end up with another gun panic. Gun panics are of zero concern to me. So my advice when things calm down, buy gradual , buy consistiently because there will surely be another gun panic...

For sure, little by little stock the shelves 😊
