Good video. As per your results, I would be more comfortable carrying a .41 magnum in a revolver.

Thanks for posting. Keep 'em coming.

I have been under the impression for some time that the 10mm and .41 mag were somewhat close when it came to ballistics, until I researched  it further today, apparently I have been wrong, still, 16rds of 220gr Underwood hard cast in the RIA would be formattable bear protection as far as I'm concerned
Thanks

I have been under the impression for some time that the 10mm and .41 mag were somewhat close when it came to ballistics...

This is a common misconception.  The 41 Mag was envisioned as a "dual power" cartridge with heavy loads for game and mid-range loads for law enforcement.  These mid-range loads are just pretty close to 10mm power levels in most factory defensive ammo from the big names.

When comparing full power 10mm loads from boutique loaders, the 10mm delivers performance on par with  the mid-range loads for 41 magnum. For reference, Ballistics by the inch reports that a Winchester Silvertip in 175 grain from a 5" contender barrel moves 1185 fps from the 41 magnum and 1225 from the 10mm.  A 210 grain Gold Dot makes 1363 in the 5" 41 magnum, and we know from this video a 200 grain 10mm hardcast is pretty close to that number as well.

This gives the false impression that 10mm is about equal to 41 magnum.  The Buffalo Bore load dispels that myth delivering over 1600 fps from the 5" contender barrel with a 170 grain JHP.  That is at least 150 fps faster than the the hottest 10mm loads, probably more like 200 fps faster.

I do find the test results in the video interesting.  Discounting the low velocity "flyer" in the 357 magnum, the 10mm had only a slight edge in velocity.  The 180 grain 357 magnum has a significant edge in sectional density (200 vs 178).  I would have expected more parity in the testing.  I would be interested in seeing 5 shot averages between the two for penetration.  I think the 357 magnum would come in much closer than the video shows on the surface.

Comes down to capacity.

My 686 carries six with no reload.

My Xdm carries 15+1 with reload.

Yep some one beat me to it.  I got the KGP-161 and Glock 40 combo, for me its capacity and for the 357 reload is a speed loader. To me it comes down to on tap capacity. When I was looking for a good woods gun with a 6" barrel and 15 plus rounds, only one affordable was the G-40 as the RIA 52000 Ultra thingy was no where to be found. Glock 20 with 6" barrel was an option but I wanted a full barrel in the gun.

My General Rule for a woods side arm was, take a high cap auto pistol with the bolt or single shots. The wheel gun with the semi autos. Pump shot gun didn't matter. Now its just the G-40 mostly for every thing, because its a semi auto 15 round 10 mm for practical reasons. Wheel guns ride less, but still offer decent protection.

Higher capacity & faster followup shots have me carrying my G29 (w 15 rnd mag) when out in the woods. My area has not only Mtn Lion, but Grizz, Moose and a substantial wolf population.

Thanks for doing the video!! 10mm has long ago replaced .357 for my EDC (G29 w.G20 mag), but on occasion i still woods carry .357 in an 8 rd S&W 627. No bears around here, and either caliber will handle coyotes, bobcats, 2-legged predators, etc.
Been wanting a KKM barrel for the G40. I guess it has to be now, or maybe never.
