You can't fix stupid but you can numb it for a while with a 2X4

My brother carries a 40SW Witness. Been carrying it all along the Texas/Mexico border. Been 100% reliable so far. He claims if the gun could talk, he'd have to take a torch to it. Not sure the exact model but he's had it over 20 years. Considering his territory and the drug runners in the same area, if he's carrying it, it's 100% reliable as his life can be on the line there.

my full size Witness steel is my EDC. but I don't carry it concealed. mostly it is my "truck gun".

Yep, it's tough concealing /  carrying something that large in the warm months

I carried a full size steel witness 10mm for about 3-4 years.  I used a DIY IWB holster that was, to be honest, terrible.  It was the first gun I carried and I was too poor at the time to afford a decent holster.

Several things have happened in the intervening years.  First, I am no longer eating ramen while struggling through school with a family to support. Second, kydex has matured a great deal.  Three, I have learned what makes a decent IWB carry holster for me.

With a good holster, this is very doable.  But the holster is key, and appendix is not comfortable at all as the back of that gun is very pointy.

Thanks for the info. So far no compacts I wonder what the reason is. Reliability ? On just size?

I have an eaa witness compact steel that I carry.  It is both reliable and accurate.

Goldbead, over at the Bren Ten forum has carried a full size Witness for many years.

Thanks for the responses I had a chance at at older steel compact. Had him strip it down and found a crack in the frame so I passed on it

I heard that was an issue on the older models.  Get a new one!  They can be found pretty inexpensive if you look around.

I love the feel of the compact steel, but I can't make the thing run reliably.

Hate the cheesy double spring setup, and that's the only way it runs at all.  Sometimes with those springs, it has a pause before returning to battery.  A little unnerving when your ready for the next shot.

Don't know if its a mag issue, a spring issue, but I cannot trust the gun for carry.

Have a limited pro that NEVER misses a beat, but not my idea of a carry gun.

Geeman, it sounds like it needs a 'fluff and buff'. This was very common procedure to the early Witness line. You can google that term for pictorial details, but essentially it is taking a dremel, a polishing wheel, Flitz compound, and polishing the feedramp, and the slide rail contact area. That fixed all my failure to feed issues back when I had one. I traded mine (plus cash) for a S&W 1026 Police. Any gun can be carried, even a Desert Eagle, but when there are lighter and/or more compact options that are even more proven, I don't feel the need to carry steel.
I have a few dozen of 10mm's to choose from, ranging in price from $250 to $5500. My favorite to shoot is a Star Megastar. Most accurate is a toss up between Dan Wesson Razorback and Springfield Omega Match. CCW gun is Glock 29. My woods gun has been a G20 for nearly 25 years but I might switch that out to the G40 if/when I get a holster for it.
