I often carry the .45 Super in the woods since my fiance carries the 10mm
Will be filming a hard cast and xtreme penetrator video soon.
Which would you carry in bear woods?

I'm working on a M&P 45 super right now. Springs should be here next week, but first trials with my 1911 were impressive.

I'm also eyeing up a XDM osp 10mm, but plan to wring out the super first.

We are headed back to Ak next June, for 3 weeks of fishing and hiking, so the super at least will be replacing the bear spray !

After looking at Underwood's offerings the lighter weight 45 Super are really moving. Don't know much about the Super, but would be inclined to stick with a 200, or 220 HC / 10mm in bear country

It's a great option

If it feeds reliably, hard cast.

AlaskanBallistics

Agreed... hardcast is next on the list

AlaskanBallistics

Agreed.. plan on filming the hardcast tomorrow morning

10mm for me.  While the 45 Super does deliver some added energy, velocity was the same  and sectional density is down to .161 from .179 for the 10mm.  Add in the extra magazine capacity and I don't think the 10mm gives anything up.

With the kinda bears you got up in those woods.....  No doubts for me: 200gr or 220gr WFNHC in 10mm.  15 +1 please!  Know the 45 super is powerful too but hard to beat the 10 to me.

I like the extreme penetrator for wild hogs or even black bears fine howver, when contemplating the huge, powerful, ornery bears up there......  Nothing else does as well as the WFNHC IMHO.

Phil Shoemaker got by once with the 9mm and hardcast.  Personally think Phil and his clients were the luckiest people in the world that day.

I carry both just not at the same time  :D

I have a Ruger P90 that I updated the recoil spring and it shoots 45super Underwood HC like a champ.

I am a big 10mm fan boy though.

Yes they're very lucky

Here in central PA bears are not much of an issue..... so this is just opinion.  I think the 10mm.... especially the Glock.... and especially the G40 with a KKM barrel give the absolute best mix of reliability, speed of shots, accuracy of shots and maximum number of shots in the easiest to carry package.  No doubt the 45 Super has more power but it comes at the cost of everything else.  A couple other guys on this forum might say about the same thing only in regard to their 6" Dan Wesson's.

I recall you and Chuke doing a "bear charge" video.  It was very revealing for trying to put lead into a charging critter.  It fully demonstrated the folly of only looking at ft lbs.

I just got done shooting some Underwood 255gr .45 Super hard cast in some clear gel. Both of the shots in bare gel went through four blocks of gel, over 64 inches! So yes I will pick hard cast.

AlaskanBallistics

You got video of that hardcast?
