Speeds Feeds and Ballistics

At the 2018 Shot Show Speer released its 200gr 10MM ammunition. Over the past year it has received mixed reviews. Fanatics of 10MM have seen this ammo as nothing more than what 40S&W is capable of. Speer has seen a lot of positive press as well, this 10MM ammunition delivering the right depth of penetration for personal protection that's capable of being suppressed.

At the 2019 Shot Show Federal released its 200gr 10MM ammunition claiming to be the 10MM ammunition of choice for self defense. Federal advertises this ammunition to reach speeds of 1130fps. The HST locked jacketed core is advertised to retain 100% of its weight even after passing through barriers.

To test reliability I fired 20 rounds of each brand through a Springfield XDM 4.5 10MM and Kriss Vector Carbine 10MM. The Speer Gold Dot felt really weak in the Kriss Vector and failed to cycle it 3 times out of 40 Shots. The Federal HST was flawless at 100% reliability.See the video for complete details and visit http://www.dayattherange.com for reviews of the Springfield XDM and Kriss Vector Carbine in 10MM and don't forget to visit the 10MM Loading Depot where other factory and 10MM reloads are tested and cataloged. http://www.dayattherange.com/?page_id=6173

Thanks for the vid. Very good presentation. If the penetration is important to you, there a lot to glean from the vid. The 180gr HST that I handload, when I can find the spent bullet in the animal, looks just like the 200gr you had at the end of the vid. Kinda hard to argue with the results. But even an old South Texas hog sometimes lets the bullets fly right on thru. Wound channel is a mess though. I haven't had one run off yet using these HST 180grs at 1250'ps. I appreciate all of your efforts.

Thanks guys I appreciate the support. What do you all think about a video for 40S&W same ammo brands. Getting comments about the comparison.

Great video!! This gives us alot of data to work with. I think this is very important seeing Speer may be contemplating the 200GD as a component bullet. I personally didn't like the way the Speer performed in the video, at the lower velocity it didn't seem to open to the full potential, yet at 50fps higher it seemed to open too much. Watching your work I think Federal has a winning bullet(even though ATK owns both). If I were looking to load a hp bullet over HC WFN for hunting, I think I could count on the HST to perform adequately. Federal could have increased the velocity by 50fps and the HST still would perform flawlessly. I will be looking for 200gr HST pulldowns in the months to come.
