Howdy! New to the forum, and (hopefully soon) new to 10mm. Sorry if this post is a big lengthy, but I'm not a rich man, so to make every dollar count, I gotta be thorough!

I live in the back woods of New England, and I'd like a nice woods walk-out gun.

My first thought was a Glock in 10mm - any size mag I want, reliable, and a cartridge that will take care of any moose or bear (or 2-legged critter) I have an unfriendly encounter with. However, I'm not a great shot with a pistol, so a carbine would give me the extra grip and sight radius I need for a quicker target.

IF I get a carbine, I want the mag in the grip for compactness and a collapsible stock, preferably like a wire slide-out stock. This would also make it look awesome, a very important aspect of woods survival.

Obviously my first thought was the MekTek conversion upper. But I don't know anybody who has one, I've never held one, and the gun store clerk recommended just getting a dedicated carbine.

Most options Ive seen online are more like small rifles than like big handguns. Many have AR-style grips and stocks, mags forward of the trigger, and really are no different than normal rifles besides the cartridges they chamber.

Three have caught my eye though.

Kel-tec CMR is EXACTLY what I want a carbine to look and function like, down to the slide out stock and light weight and everything - but it only comes in 22. Does any other manufacturer make a gun just like this but in bigger calibers?

Kel-tec Sub-2000 takes the Glock mags, and is otherwise a perfect fit for what I want, but only comes in 9mm and .40. Would .40 be a good alternative caliber to 10mm for dealing with bigger critters?

Hi-point 995TS - a 10mm carbine, budget I could afford in a few WEEKS instead of a year, apparently more reliable than their pistols, but... no collapsible stock, and... Ew, Hi-point??

For those versed in 10mm, what are your thoughts? Any of these options good? Are there other options I havent found yet, perhaps older guns no longer being made, like military surplus, that fit the bill? Or should I just bite the bullet (pun intended) and go for the MekTek conversion kit?

P.S.- I DO have a carbine-length lever gun, a Winchester 94 in 30-30. I freaking LOVE that gun, and would carry that thing everywhere I went, but it only holds 5 rounds and is not semi-auto, so it's less practical for defense. Several websites I read were quick to go to leverguns concerning pistol-caliber carbines.

from what you said you wanted, the Mek Tek sounds like your best option. I don't have one but have considered them in the past. another member here, Gandog, has one and several other 10mm carbines. he will probably be able to give you more insight on the carbines.

Starquestman, Welcome to the forum!  You might want to consider the HiPoint 10mm carbine reasonably priced for your application!
Best regards!  :D

Don't be afraid of the HiPoint. OK the pistols do suck completely, but the carbines are actually quite good, and given the price, are actually exceptional.

I built an 10" SBR, RMW DI 10mm AR. But expensive, magwell AR, etc, misses your target - but it's exceptionally lightweight, easier than anything to wield, accurate, and chamber is bullet proof.

If your wanting it as a walkout gun, you may want to consider another factor, weight. Both the MechTech and the Hi Point are HEAVY. If weight is no problem go with the MechTech, because you can use any Glock or 1911 lower as long as the mag's fit, and you can have a barrel and slide for it and basically have two guns. If weight is an issue look at the Extra in 10mm. They will run about $200 more than the Hi Point, but  seem to be unavailable right now. This is not a slam against the Hi Point, I have one and I love it, but for the specs you stated it may not be the best fit.

Check out the Aero Survival Rifle In 10MM. I have the hipoint but as others have said it's heavy and the stock is awful, shoots good though.

Quit looking any further and just pick a good handgun back-up to your Winchester. Take a portion of the money you were going to spend on a 10mm carbine and put it towards 30-30 ammo, and really learn how to shoot that rifle. Once that's done you'll be ten-times as lethal as you'd be if you bought a 10mm carbine for the extra magazine capacity.

If you want to make every dollar count, learn to use what you have to its fullest advantage. Caliber and platform are completely irrelevant in comparison to marksmanship.

Don't knock HiPoint, They're better than you think. The 10mm carbine is the 1095TS, not 995TS (that's the 9mm). I had a 4095TS and it shoots a mean 40.

HiPoint has the best warranty on this planet. No question asked.

But if you really need to protect yourself from large animals like the moose, get an AR15. You can get a decent one for between 400-500 dollars.
How powerful is 10mm? Well, see those craters on the moon?
