I am new to the board and to 10mm and I have a Question  or 3 about the Underwood  10mm 180grain XTP Ammo

I Just bought a Glock 21 Gen 4  45ACP and also bought a Storm Lake 10mm 6inch barrel.

I would like to know what Kind of Velocity the Underwood 180 gr XTP ammo Actually gets ?I know it is rated to get 1300 but wondering if it really will do 1300? I do not have a Chrono But thought that Someone here might have Run the ammo through their Chrono recently?

Also do I need a different RSA than the Factory dual spring setup which I understand is 17 pound ?

I bought the Pistol for self defense and whitetail deer hunting at ranges of 50 yards and less.

Good morning bcraig and welcome to the forum!!!

I've got the Glock Gen 3 (which does benefit from the heavier RSA for the hot stuff), so I'll defer to others here who use the Gen 4 and duel spring setup.

As for Underwood ammo.  Their velocity claims are typically spot on and you can rely on their advertised results.
They often test with real carry firearms.  Actually, with your 6" aftermarket Storm Lake barrel, it's probably safe to presume the bullet may exceed what's listed in the box a bit.

From personal experience (along with several others on this forum), if you make a good, clean shot at appropriate distances, the Underwood 180gr & 200gr XTP will work like a charm on deer & medium sized game.

Best of luck!

Hello and welcome to the forum bcraig.  Underwood is one company that usually meets and can exceed its advertised data for its ammo which for 10mm is usually based on a 5" barrel.
these were tested by members here on the forum and that info is found here http://10mm-firearms.com/factory-10mm-ammo/10mm-factory-ammo-master-sheet/msg13/#msg13

Thanks for the welcome guys and thanks for the info.

This Video and comments is what was concerning me as to the velocity.
Maybe he just had a bad chrony ?

I will say that UW has changed their powder used in the ammo with the shortages.  The newer loadings have been showing Shooters World Major Pistol / LOVEX D037-01 which is similar to AA#7.
Have seen this load for the 180's vary from 13.0 to 13.4 grains in a few of the pull-downs.

My test of this powder:
LOVEX D037.01
High density, double base, ball propellant similar to Accurate No. 7
designed for 9 mm NATO carbine ammunition. Somewhat more
specialized in applications than D032 and D036, it is well suited to high
intensity cartridges. It is a good choice for .357, .41 and .44 Magnum
cartridges, when slightly less than full powder loads are preferred.)

Test results 12/26/2014

#1 (0.5 grain over highest AA#7 book loading)
Rainer 180gr HEX Plated HP
Star Line (new) COAL is 1.2550"
LOVEX D037-01 12.0 grains
From the Glock 20SF Factory barrel Wolff 22lb spring and recoil rod \
Velocity 1128 FPS
Case expansion 0.4320"

#2 (1.0 grain over highest A#7 book loading)
Rainer 180gr HEX Plated HP
Star Line (new) COAL is 1.2550"
LOVEX D037-01 12.5 grains
From the Glock 20SF Factory barrel Wolff 22lb spring and recoil rod
Velocity 1238 FPS
Case expansion 0.4330"

#3 (1.5 grain over highest A#7 book loading)
Rainer 180gr HEX Plated HP
Star Line (new) COAL is 1.2550"
LOVEX D037-01 13.0grains

Case expansion 0.4335"

Glock factory barrels do run a little shower than some of the tighter tolerance conventional rifled barrels...

Has anyone Velocity tested the Most recently produced Underwood 10mm ammo ?

It's a long video and kind of hard to watch (I don't really watch water jug tests myself). Didn't he switch to another Chrony and got good results?

I would expect -25 FPS less in a G20 and especially if it possibly doesn't have a recoil spring set up for the load. It did shock me a little with the 100 FPS, but his Chrony was IMO too close to the water jugs (he thought maybe the initial one got wet).

bcraig

Yes He did talk about setting up another chrony but even after he did this ,If I remember right he still only got about 1250 from the load.
and he did say he wondered if he got the chrony wet.

What Really got me to wondering was where he said that that was about as he expected with the 10mm Loads from Underwood, something to the effect of the other loads including 9mm always met the velocities but not the 10mm.
Then in the comments below there were a couple of guys that seemingly confirmed the 10mm ammo not meeting the velocities.

Maybe a bad batch of ammo,bad chronys,RSA ? I sure dont know !

Kenk

I think it's safe to say UW's 180gr XTP will meet or beat the the advertised FPS

Even with that one video (who knows what happened)....  There are tons & tons of videos and testimonials by independent people testing Underwood Ammo and by OVERWHELMING majority, people comment on the velocity meeting advertised fps.

A week or so ago I chrono'd the Underwood 200 grain hard cast Hi-Tek coated round (their #248):

Glock 20 Gen 4
10 rounds
Labradar chrono (therefore at the muzzle)
1176 fps (average)
1190.75 fps (highest)
1162.41 fps (lowest)
Extreme Spread: 28.34 fps
Std. Deviation: 10.55 fps

I've been comparing a pulldown I did of the Hi-Tek bullet in this thread:
http://10mm-firearms.com/factory-10mm-ammo-pull-downs/underwood-200gr-hard-cast-provided-by-intercooler-nov-2017/

Underwood lists its speed at 1250fps on the box, which I'd expect comes from a longer barrel than the 4.6" stock barrel on my new G20.4.

That round is now out of stock, sure hoping to score at least a couple more boxes before my annual Fall fishing trip to Jellystone. I'll be interested in what Kenk thinks of the XTPs...

I hope it is up to velocity as I just got 4 Boxes delivered today.
Here is another fairly recent Video giving velocity of the 180 Grain Load

Used Underwood 10mm 180gr & 200gr XTP on wild boar & deer.  No complaints here.

Kenk

The 180gr XTP has served me well for deer hunting. I have not checked the FPS of these from my G20, but others on this forum are convinced the live up to UW's advertised FPS
