We're on the move again next month. Hopefully this is our last stop. Always wanted to live in Texas. We signed a lease on an apartment in Richardson, just north of Dallas while we look for a house to purchase.

So, if we have any Texas people here, especially Dallas/Ft. Worth area, tell me everything I need to know.

Wishing you all the best in this adventure, as you all embark on the move to Texas.  Hope all goes as planned and easy travels.
Take care!  :D

I live west of the Metroplex.

I didn't look to see where you are moving from but you will need to learn a lot of patience driving.

And learn to like toll roads if you want to get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time.

If you have any specific questions just ask here or PM me.

Welcome to the heat. Our seasons are only two, hot and not so hot. Actually Dallas area will usually get light snow every year. Move south of Waco and nobody has a clue what that frozen crap is but it closes schools, businesses, and hiways. Be warned about hunting feral hogs in Texas. Per Texas Parks and Wildlife, over 50% of the feral hog population will have or is a carrier of Brusellosis. Yes, you can get it by handling or touching the hog. Another over 50% of the feral hogs has or is a carrier of Pseudorabies. While rare, you can get this horrible nerve disease too. It was found about 2 years ago in a man who handled an infected hog he had killed. We usually kill them and leave them lay. Yes, we have Lyme disease in ticks here. My little brother, the Gov't trapper, has Lyme and for him, there is no cure. He will die from complications of it. He always has symptoms and has been diagnosed having it. The State and Federal Gov't has spent over 1 million of your tax dollars trying to cure him. There's not much public land here so most of our hunting is done on leases. It can be an expensive venture. A deer only lease around Laredo will run you right at $10.00 an acre with the smallest place being about 5000 acres. It takes a huge amount of land in South Texas as it's almost desert country and all animal life is sparse. The Texas Hill Country is known for an over abundance of deer and turkey. It's not uncommon to go out on an evenings hunt and see 50 deer. But they are small in the Hill Country with average weight around 80lbs. Lots of coyote hunting available but it's usually confined to a paid hunting lease. Webb County has the largest population in world. The last year my little brother had coyotes as a target animal he managed to kill over 3000. He didn't put a dent in the population. There are some ranches north of where you'll be living that have huge deer populations. You'll need to ask around about it if you have the interest.
One last tidbit and if you want details, send me a private message and I'll fill you in. Do not hunt/go anywhere within 50 miles of the Mexican border. Do not plan to visit any place/city along the border in Mexico. Most commonly the police are on the cartels payroll, you have no rights there.

That's my kind of Coyote hunting, I tell-ya : )

I've lived in the metroplex for over 50 years. I prefer Ft. Worth area to Dallas just because of the difference between the people. Dallas is a lot more urbanized, with less friendly people in city and county government and a lot more minority/affirmative action minded county and city governments. Dallas is democrat controlled county and city. The taxes in Dallas County are higher than Tarrant County. In the areas north of Dallas and Ft. Worth is the highest areas of congestion and heaviest traffic. Depending on whether you prefer big city/urbanized living with minority controlled governments, then Dallas is for you. Dallas is also infested with gang members from black gangs (Bloods and Crips), Hispanic gangs (Tango Blast, MS13, and various others), to Asian gangs (BTK, ABH, Angel Boys, and others). The Dallas Independent School District is infested with gang members as well as illegal aliens that the school district protects like a sanctuary city.

Since you are just moving here, you are going to be able to move anywhere. If you prefer a slower pace of life and still want a decent sized city, then I'd recommend moving to Tyler, which is about 90 miles east of Dallas. Tyler is a lot more scenic area with forests and plenty of trees and has a fairly decent sized city without the gigantic headaches of the traffic congestion that Dallas has and a fraction of the crime that Dallas has. It also has a number of colleges as well as the University of Texas at Tyler if you're interested in that. If I could I'd move to Tyler to get out of the rat race that is DFW.

Ft. Worth is smaller than Dallas and the people aren't as urbanized as Dallas, so they tend to be friendlier. Especially when dealing with city and county government employees. A lot friendlier. Ft. Worth also has a gang problem like Dallas, but, because it is smaller, it has a lot less of them. There are also a ton of suburban smaller cities all over and around Dallas and Ft. Worth.

Just stay away from Flower Mound. It had a really bad reputation as a speed trap (deservedly so) back in the 60s and up. It is just a weird city. The Police Dept. is one that you don't want to have to deal with. For decades they have had their controversies. A few years ago there was a TV story about a woman who took her two daughters (8 and 10 years old) to the aprk to play. The kids got into a squabble and the police showed up and arrested the 8 year old daughter for domestic violence against her 10 year old sister. They took her into custody against the objections of her mother and down to the police station for booking. The news station reporter went down to the station after the mother contacted them to report the arrest. They recorded an interview with a police Lieutenant outside the station and the Lt. defended the actions of the officer who arrested the 8 year old. The Lt. stated that the law is quite clear that if they arrive at a domestic violence situation that someone must g to jail. The reporter asked, an 8 year child? And the Lt. stated the law is clear. The reporter then went to the Denton County District Attorney's Office (Flower Mound is in Denton County) and an Assistant District Attorney stated that the Flower Mound police Lt. was wrong and that they should not have arrested the 8 year old child. He also went on to state that if Flower Mound were to forward that case to them for criminal prosecution, that they wouldn't hesitate to decline it. This is just one of many bizarre things that Flower Mound has done.

Good luck with your search.

Lol, we have all see this type of enforcement, regardless of location,  however I have the highest regard for Law Enforcement. It's a tough job, but there's always going to be a few rogue offerers, and crooked city Governments, just be safe regardless of where you decide to live

Good luck! I want to look at Texas for a retirement move. I need 50-85 year round temps with not a bunch of humidity. Is that possible there?

East Texas-nope, humidity is horrible year round.

South Texas, it's dry, no doubt, but the temps during the summer that yer looking for is the night time temps with daytime well over 100F.

West Texas, depends on the location. I'd look towards Marfa or Alpine. Maybe those will have closer to the temps during the summer you want. Downside to both is that it snows out there and getting anywhere can be a problem. Due to low population density there isn't much in the way of services there. It's a great place to live though. If you can stand to live in Nowhere Texas, look at Ft Davis, Texas. It's high in elevation +5000', is dry and temps are in your MAX range. Be aware though, just because it's Thursday and 3PM in the afternoon doesn't mean any and every store in town is open. They're open when they feel like it. And they won't be open on Sunday. Ft Davis is roughly 30 miles north of Marfa and 50 miles south of Balmorhea, not much out there but mile after mile of nothing but mile after mile. Good hunting though.

North Texas, probably the panhandle will have the low humidity but being next to Oklahoma, I doubt the temps will be in your favor.

There's also the Valley but humidity is going to be a killer. Got friends at Mission and while they like it, it's incredibly humid but mild temps with occasional 100F.

I've got family at Fredricksburg and at Hamilton. Both get temps over 100F during the summer. Otherwise, reasonably dry with a couple of weeks of humid days.

Thank you Patriot, and Howdy from Texas! Feel free to PM questions, but I'm in the West side of Houston.  I do not like any large city, but alas, that's where the jobs are.

I lived in Dallas in the 1970s and 80s...was a really great city to live in.  Had several friends who lived in Richardson and Garland that liked the towns...

The crime and traffic is horrible however. You could chain a Honda to a telephone pole and in the morning not only would the bike and chain be gone but a good possibility the pole also. Where I live now, I could park my Harley in the driveway running...it would run out of gas and fall over when the kickstand rusted out before anyone ever stole it...

And as said, if you like hunting hope you have DEEP pockets.  There are a lot of places one can hunt hogs cheap because they are such a scourge but deer and bird hunting is a whole nother ball game...

Good luck to you and thanks for a great site....
