That's a nice looking rig!

It is a fantastic rig, unfortunately I found out I prefer belt carry.  I'm going to to put my Sportsmen's Chest Holster up for sale sometime soon.

Yep, I like wearing both at the same myself

Hey, Ken,

I have one of the Gen 2 Kenai holsters on order for my Glock 20 Gen 4, for use for backup on Yellowstone region fishing trips..

So it'll ride on my chest while I'm in waders — if you have any thoughts on best practices in using the Kenai I'd love to hear them.

Thanks.

Hey Commo,
They seem to work best (at least for me) riding high on your chest. Once adjusted correctly you will enjoy it a great deal

Ken, seems like fairly high up on the chest will be best what with needing to clear the top of the waders if the SHTF...also thinking that access might be better if I can offset the holster to the left an inch or two (as a right-hander) so as to put the grip of the gun closer to the center of the chest...(there are the suspenders of the waders to deal with..)

Thoughts?

Thanks,

I've been wearing my Kenai chest holster (Glock 20 w. 6" barrel) while mountain biking this summer and fall. I think that the strong side waist is the best place to cary a weapon, but after a career in law enforcement I've got nerve damage from the duty belt and I'm loath to wear anything heavy around my waist. That goes double on a bicycle.

The Kenai is a lot more comfortable than I expected. I thought the single strap over my left shoulder would be really annoying, but I don't feel it at all until about hour-3, and it's still fine for another two hours. After five hours of riding most everything hurts, including the holster.

There's a small amount of outward flop in the leaned-over biking position since the handle of the weapon is so much heavier than the muzzle end, but it's not really an issue.

In general I prefer my Hill People chest pack because it doesn't make you look like a guy with a gun strapped to your chest, but it has two big drawbacks: First, it simply doesn't allow a fast enough draw to react to any sort of sudden encounter. I've used it for years and practiced plenty. I've sewn pull tabs at the corner to make it easier to open the gun compartment. It's still terribly slow. You really need a several-second warning to arm yourself if you cary with the chest pack, which isn't ideal. I live in Montana, and while I don't bike in prime grizzly country, there's no law prohibiting grizzlies from passing through. If there's a better way to surprise a bear (or moose) than on a bike, I've not heard of it.

The other drawback to the Hill People chest pack is I inevitably put too much weight in it, at which point it becomes really uncomfortable for biking.

I think the price of the Kenai is pretty proud, but if it allows you to cary your weapon while out and about, it's money well spent. It holds the gun securely, it's easy to take on and off, it provides very quick access, and it's easy to adjust. I don't think it's superior to a belt holster, but if you cannot wear a belt holster for whatever reason, it's a good compromise.

Buddy just got one for his delta, seems like a slick rig, he's very happy with it so far.

Update,  after a couple weeks of chasing bears with hounds, no complaints, he's pretty tickled with it.

Check out the Chesty Puller chest rig at Simply Rugged.  He makes an adapter for cheap that can be utilized with most ALL of your holsters into a chest rig holster.  I have had others just under $200 and sold them all after running into this option.

Fishing this week in Yellowstone country and finding the Kenai holster works very well in its position under the waders..once it's in place it doesn't hinder my casting at all.

Here's hoping I never have call to use it but it's comforting as I walk a couple miles from the vehicle both inside and outside YNP..Along with the bear spray on my hip I've got some protection at hand..

Concealed under the waders it's pretty easy to draw quickly. I find if I keep the harness snug I can draw without holding down the holster but it pulls more easily if I use my left hand outside the waders to steady the strap on my left. (Note that I will also wear a jacket or fly vest while fishing..)

Glock 20 Gen 4 loaded with Underwood 200 grain hard cast Hi-Tek coated bullets..still figuring out how to carry extra magazine(s) for quick access.
