I've been toying with the notion of hunting with my 10mm carbine this deer season in ohio. I've been loading and testing some loads and have probably settled on a 200gr xtp load. I tried the 180gr in my carbine. With the 17.5" barrel its clocking close to 1600fps and in gel tests has just destroyed the bullet. The 200gr XTP at 1400fps out of the carbine has been very accurate out to 75 yards. Any insight of the recovered bullets or deer that has been taken with the 10mm?

The deer I shot with a 200 grain XTP was from my muzzle loader, while the bullet started out right at 2000 fps at the muzzle at the 140 yard impact it would have been about 1200 fps.
The bullet entered on the right side behind the front shoulder, broke ribs entering blew through both lungs and heart, broke a rib on the far side an came to rest under the skin behind the left shoulder.  The deer ran down hill about 200 yards and crashed dead.  Hornady bullet opened up and rolled back on itself, expanded to .700" widest .640" narrowest, length from mushroom to base of the bullet .480", retained weight was 162 grains.

Shadow, how big are the deer down there? Here in north central Ohio they're corn fed country deer lol. My deer last year was a 8 point 200lb+ buck before dressing him out, netted me an entire freezer full of meat and we just finished it up 2 weeks ago.

Some range about 170-180 but often smaller.  After I deboned all of mine I had 94 lbs meat all of it went to sausage (132 lbs of sausage total was made when adding the pork)

In MN they can get pretty big. When looking at meat quality, I would prefer a mid size deer any day of the week. (150-180) Two years ago I got my first one with a pistol, the G20, our daughters both thought it was roast beef , Lol : )

That's interesting the 180gr got torn up in gel at 1600fps. I cannot find the pdf online anymore but I remember reading that the velocity ranges for the 10mm XTPs were 700-1200fps for the 200gr and 1150-1800fps for the 180gr XTP. I believe you, just it's interesting given the chart I read. I will see if I can find it.

Both boxes of my new XTP's 180gr and 200gr say velocity ranger 700fps-1500fps. I'll get a picture of them and post it.

I posted pictures of on the forum regarding the 180gr and the gel block. It split gel block and the bullet shed its jacket, and fragmented some.

I invited my parents and my father in law over for Christmas dinner. Told them I was doing a roast, just didn't mention what kind. Now mind you, my parents are country raised but neither hunt. When they down the first helping and went back for seconds, they asked where I got the beef roast from. Said o e of the best they ever had. I proceeded to chuckle as I explained it wasn't beef but the deer I shot on our farm.

They were amazed, and promptly asked for some meat to take home.

I live in North Central Ohio, predominantly all farm land and the deer graze on corn. Even the big ones aren't game tasting, they may be tougher, but mainly taste just like beef.

Shadow, not to much difference then, we have plenty of room, if they decide to run. So I'm feeling pretty confident in this.

The numbers you list make me wonder if I should switch from 200gr XTP to 180gr XTP. I wonder if Hornady has made any small changes to the bullets over the last 20 years and that's why the recommended velocity ranges changed slightly.

I don't reload myself and I like Underwood, so it's 200gr @ 1250fps or 180gr @1300fps

Not sure if they've updated the bullets per shadows post or what they are putting on the new boxes of bullets. Out my carbine the 180gr just shredded itself.

Out of the pistol you can't really go wrong with either one. I'm still on the fence about which one I want to use. I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet soon and choose one lol.

Fiocchi 180 Jhp, cheap, 1250fps, textbook expansion and I have taken 2 deer without problem.
