I am getting ready to order some deer hunting ammo for my G40 MOS and am torn between the 165 and 180 gr Gold Dots from Underwood. Is the 165 gr loaded too fast for the Gold Dot?

Kenk

Have always liked UW's 180 XTP for Whitetail but am sure the 165 GD would work well

The 180 Gold Dots would be better in my opinion.   The New Speer 200 grain Gold Dot would work well even though they only do 1100 fps.
However I handload using 200 grain Hornady @ 1225 fps and even have some older pulled Speer 200 grain Gold Dots at the same velocity...

Been begging Speer to start selling the NEWER 200 grain Gold Dots as components for handloading...If they did then Underwood and others will also load them for the buying public. ::)

Yep, for 150 - 250 lb Whitetail, the 180's seem to be a happy medium weight between the 155's, 165's, and the 200 grainers that UW offers, and in all actuality, any of the above would work fine in the 15-30 yard range

The one thing I stumbled upon between the two is the 180 is built  with a deeper cavity than the 165. Supposedly it's for higher velocities with the 165 gr and even though they are bonded bullets the 165 should hold together a little better. However since the 180 doesn't go as fast its probably a wash between the two.

The 165 bonded is my current carry rd, and would certainly perform well in that capacity : )

I also use the UW 165gr as my everyday carry round. Personally if you want to go UW for deer hunting I would use the 200gr. JMHO.

With UW's velocities, absolutely a great choice, I have a box on hand now for the November's hunt : )

To be humane for the animals I'd use the heavy slug.
How powerful is 10mm? Well, see those craters on the moon?

Not sure about white tail but it's what I carry in my G20 while desert trekking for possible encounters with charging javelina (when I have my dog along) and mountain lion.
The 2nd Amendment is not a privilege, it is my birthright as an American. Always carry...

Welcome to the forum Crotalus,
G20 is an excellent choice for protection when hiking in the great outdoors!!

I've  always liked the Underwood 165gr Gold Dot as my spare mag for back country and while traveling. Excellent velocities and expansion.

For OP's application, I think the Underwood 180gr G.D. or XTP would be more preferable.
