Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum as well as to the 10mm. But I have the itch to buy one. I do have a pretty good understanding of various firearms, but in your guys opinion, would you recommend I go with the 1911 platform or others. Not biased either way, just looking for solid advice. Thanks!

Guess it depends on your usage....

Work gun; for the woods, Glock 20 for the higher capacity
Target gun;  in 1911 format
Closet Queen gun; Sig Sauer 220/10mm

SPDSR

Likes: Grip safety, Budget: ~ $1800++ = Semi-custom 1911
Likes: Not a grip safety, Budget: ~ Not $1800 = GLOCK 20

Sonny10MM

I would recommend the Sig 220 in 10MM. Less likely to have any issues out of the box than any other brand besides the Glock 20.

This guns usage will be mainly for deer hunting, as well as a carry gun when I'm out bow hunting or just bumming in the woods. I have shot the glock 20, and maybe because I have put much time into it. But it just doesn't feel right. You guys that mentioned the Sig, you guys really like them? Is kimber a brand to stay away from?

For me, my EDC is a 1911 10mm pistol because it is the easiest full size pistol to carry concealed. I use two double OWB Blade Tech Eclipse magazine carriers to carry 4 spare magazines on my belt. Because of the slim size profile of 1911 magazines, it is very easy and comfortable to carry four spares. I used to own several 1911 pistols in .45 ACP and even had one Colt in .38 Super. But, I got rid of all of them and replaced them all with 10mm 1911 pistols because there isn't a better, more effective caliber than full house 10mm rounds.

You asked about Kimber and I'll answer, based on my personal experiences with at least 4 different model Kimber 1911 pistols. I started out with Colt 1911 pistols back in the 80's from the Combat Commander to the Government model, to the Delta Elite. Colt went through a period where their quality control sucked royally. I and a friend both purchased a brand new Colt Delta Elite back when they first were released. We took both guns to his house to clean and then intended to go to the range to test fire. Both brand new guns were defective right out of the box. The thumb safety on both guns was jammed and would not engage. I put so much force on my Delta Elite safety that I broke the plunger tube right off of the frame. We both went back to the dealer and got refunds.

In the late 90's I tried my first Kimber. A Stainless Pro Carry. It was flawless right out of the box and didn't even require a break in period. I've read about others who have had bad experiences with Kimbers and the common denominator was the external extractor on the defective models. All of the Kimbers I purchased had internal extractors, so I'm presuming that Kimber corrected that issue with the change to internal extractors. Over the years I've bought and sold a number of Kimbers from the Pro Carry to the Pro Eclipse, to the Pro Raptor, and finally a Custom TLE/RL II in 10mm. The only issues I have ever had with any Kimber was the fact that the blued steel ones had issues with rust. I also learned to dump the included Kimber magazine. They were not very reliable. I have always bought Wilson Combat magazines for all of my 1911 pistols and have never had any issues.

I've since moved up to Dan Wesson 1911 pistols in 10mm, just because the quality is better than any Kimbers, Colts, and other 1911 pistols below the $1,500 mark. My edc is a Night Hawk Custom because it is better than any Dan Wesson and has been reliable, accurate, and didn't require a break in period (Dan Wesson pistols do need a break in period).

Solid starter 1911 = RIA 10mm (pick one)

Best Budget US made 1911 = Ruger SR1911 10mm

I am a traditional prancing pony loyalist = Colt Delta Elite

I want the refinement of a gunsmithed 1911 = Dan Wesson OR Fusion

I have gobs of money to spend on a 1911 = Wilson/Ed Brown/Les Baer

I want a 10mm CZ = EAA Witness

Plastic Guns Rock = Glock 20.

I like steel and Swiss = Sig P220

Kimber?  I would not avoid Kimber if the deal was right.  But in a fair fight I would pick Ruger or Colt over kimber.  And I personally would take RIA over Kimber.

Patriot

Witness steel full size in wonder finish, 2015 model or newer. Can find them for $600 or less.

lots of good advice above.
Buy the one that "speaks to you"

Thanks everyone for the responses, I'm currently looking at the delta elite, kimber Elclipse right now. Or wait a little longer and that dan Wesson valor is beautiful.

If you are going with the 1911, you will not regret stretching a little and getting the Dan Wesson.  Certainly nothing wrong with the Colt or Kimber, (heck i wouldn't mind getting the Colt just to have the Colt) but the extra money for the DW translates into better fit, finishing, and trigger.  The additional cost is definitely worth it imo.

I gotta agree with this.

If you want American made budget get Ruger.  If you are gonna spend more than a Ruger, spend a bit more for a Dan Wesson.

Fusion never gets mentioned anymore.  If you don't known the history, they guy that started the 1911 shop at Dan Wesson left around the time CZ bought them.  He then started Fusion.  They were the darlings of the 10mm 1911 world for a time, but then some folks noted that Dan Wesson had moved far ahead in quality.  It seems since then Fusion has split into two tiers of guns, and I don't know that we have had a range report on a newer one in some time.  I wanna love Fusion and at the $800-$900 price point, I would probably pick them over a DE or Kimber.

Ok thanks. I'm looking fusion up right now
