Hunting with “standard / iron” sights?

Anyone use more traditional defensive type sights on their handgun for hunting? Something like Meprolight night sights, Trijicon HD XR, Heine, etc. What do you find most important about standard sights for the hunting task? Thin font post and wide rear notch? Standard front sight and smaller notch? More visibility/light on sides of the front or less light? I know many use modern optics and all that, but for those that don't what are your opinions?

I dont know if this is what your asking, but Im using red front and green rear fiber optics. This choice is to get around the washout of irons in dim light. So far no shots with the 10 fired at game.

I don't like any goofy stuff on my hunting sights.  For precision shots at extended range I'll stick with big flat black Bullseye type target sights.

Prefer thin front wide notch lots of light on either side, or similar front sight to notch width with minimal light?

I am with Tony.  Big black sights, nice and tight on the sides.

With the S&W 1006 the adjustable sight is some what finer and better suited for distance shots, made shots to 130 yards easily.  The combat styles are for faster target acquisition at closer distances...

I do like the red ramp sights with outlined rear like on the S&W Model 29 44 mag.  Made shots out to 180 yards in my younger days!

Key is practice and knowing your limitations.

I put meat in my freezer with Trijicon TFO sights last November. No complaints here.

Most hunting happens during the day, but night sights are a lot better than fiber optic in the first and final minutes. I like Trijicon HD sights personally. There is a lot of success to be had with TFO sights, but they are ugly. The info on the fiber optic sights is also very good. You don't want them to bloom too much and obscure the front sight or the target.

I'm debating on buying a set of the Trijicon HD XR with thinner front post. I'd like the sights to be a good compromise for hunting, matches and defense. I think the thinner front may be advantageous but not sure.

Shadow, my 1006 sights are dull white, what would you recommmend to brighten them?  I was thinking "whiteout" but not sure how that would hold up. Sometimes I think a wider notch in the rear might help to pick up the front.

Because all my 10mm are also defensive handguns I run combat sights and yea they are all night sights. The exception is the model 40 Glock that I run a Trijicon RMR

I use the Warren Tactical Sevigny sights on my G20 for deer hunting and really like them

What's the benefit of sights that are almost double the height of OEM sights? Warren, Heine, etc. most of the competition based sights tend to be very tall. I just put some Trijicon HD XR's on mine, and I'm not impressed. The front sight doesn't fill the hole in the slide leaving gaps on both sides. The rear sight is very sharp. If I bumped it, it would draw blood. I haven't shot with them yet, but they are also very tall.

Not sure either but they work great for me, plus they are snag free. Never really cared for Glocks factory sights, yet some love them
