I have looked at building one several times.  If I could still get the kits with a barrel i would have several.  I am have several friends who have build parties a couple times a year.  I have gone a couple of times to watch.

I had a Poly Tech, sold a couple of months ago.  Also sold the AR I'd owned for some years. Ironic, I bought both just before the last 'ban'.

Of the two I think the AK is a better weapon for its intended purpose. Just my opinion...

I agree with that Ed.Both serve a purpose.Depends on ones enviorment and conditions.I lean torwards the AK for my purpose and conditions.

I tend to agree with the old saying "AK's are far more accurate than you have been told and AR's are far more reliable than you have been told."

Neither have ever failed me, but I have a good friend who swears by AK's and at AR's.

I'm an AK fan. I like AR's for their ergos but prefer the AK for what it is. Had a Saiga .308 but sold it before converting it. Bought an M10 because it is cheaper to feed. Have to say, it may not be a high end AK but it came with the features I need without breaking the bank. 2 1/2" groups at 100yds with the short irons is a plus, also.

When you have hits on target with your feet moving, you're a shooter... all else is target practice.

I am looking to buy my first AK (my first rifle, actually) ... would someone mind schooling me on how the brands stack up quality wise? Who make to best? Whose are good , etc...

Of course, I may not have *any* to choose from, given the current panic :-/

Also, any comment on how and AK might compare to a 10mm carbine (MechTech conversion) ... I am toying with that idea too.

You may want to check out this article.  It seems to cover them in some detail.

Was probably luck but I did manage to shoot a roughly 1/2" (3 shot) group with my buddies M10 the other day at 50yds with irons. They seem to be living up to their reviews.

That is great.  Like I said above, AK's are more accurate than you are told.

I actually want to try my M10 with my buddies ammo after I loosen my rails up front. I think they may be a bit too snug which could be affecting acccuracy. His is just too accurate for me not to investigate mine.

Probably the biggest general improvement in accuracy for most AK's would be a single plane sighting system like a long eye relief scope, red-dot or holographic sight.  The short sight radius of the iron's puts the platform at a distinct disadvantage in the hands of all but the most proficient shooter.

Let us know how it goes!

Love me some Ak's. I got a SAR-1 and a Arseanl SLR-107SF. Great guns.
