Expected accuracy

People talk all the time about accuracy but what is accuracy to you? What size group at what yardage is acceptable? The main pistol chambering would be the 10mm in this thread but others are welcome. Please indicate the cartridge and model of gun used. Should be interesting what accuracy is to different folks shooting different pistols.

Acceptable?  Depends on a lot of things.  But the short version is (G17,G19,G20,G21.G40) offhand 5 shot groups of 3" at 25 yards, 6" at 50 yards and 12" at 100 yards.  30 years ago I was nearly twice as good but....

Guns are no doubt more accurate than me.

Here is an article that indicates about the same as my gut... 1.5" at 25 yards is about as good as it gets, and like Spudmeister, I am no where near that good.

A general rule for semi-auto pistols under $800 (Glock, M&P, XD, SIG, CZ) is 3" or less at 25 yards from a sandbag rest. Every now and then you may get one that shoots 2" groups, but most won't. The more you spend, the better the accuracy/precision.

Here are some videos from a company called Accuracy-X (Don't expect much more accuracy from a semi-auto then these):

Accuracy X is the only company that posts videos of their gun's accuracy.

My Tanfoglio Witness Hunter 10mm:
- 2 hand grip, standing
- 25 yards
- Best group (center to center) 0.9"
- Avg 3"

My CZ 75 Compact 9mm:
- 2 hand grip, standing
- 25 yards
- Best group (center to center) 1.5"
- Avg 3"

All my CZ 75 variants have the Cajun Gun Works Bushing installed. I am not super great at shooting from a rest, but guys who are report that the Cajun Gun Works Bushings bring accuracy to 1.5" or less at 25 yards. One of the Bullseye shooters on the CZ forum posts videos of his range trips. He has an old CZ 75 9mm with the Cajun Bushing and has gotten 1.5" at 50 yards from just a wrist wrest. I haven't seen ransom rest testing on them... But for pistols under $800 that Cajun Bushing is the best $60 upgrade I have seen for accuracy.

My distance shooting has been improving, but that 3" average at 25 yards with a 2 hand grip and standing isn't much to write home about. I'm not showcasing the potential of the pistols, this is just what they do in my hands. I was really trying to practice longer ranges when I got my best group with the Witness Hunter. That was even with some PPU or S&B ammo. I wish I knew someone with a ransom style rest to really see what they can do.

3" at 25 yards from a handgun.  To put that in perspective, you have to align the front and rear sight to precision of about half the thickness of copy paper.

3" @900" = 0.0266" @ 7"

I'm about the same as Sqlbullet, 3" or so at 25 yards. And that is with a gun that just fits, you know what I mean? My Remington R51 or (especially) my Grand Power P40.

Wow I never thought of it that way.

I lose interest in a handgun that I can't get to shoot under two inches at 25 yards from the bench, unless it is purely for short-range defensive purposes.

My G29 is for SD only so I practice at 10 yards. My group average is usually 2"-3".
How powerful is 10mm? Well, see those craters on the moon?

I haven't shot my G29 in about a year. I need to take it to the range this week.

What ammo you usually shoot your G29 with? And for carry?

Mine's mostly Underwood but have some Hornady and sometimes SIG Elite. I also have a 40sw and a 9x25 Dillon barrels for it. Hard to beat the versatility of the G29.  8)

I handload pretty much everything. I have some nice power pistol loads for a 180 JHP that bark out of the G29. Fun gun.
