Taking an "Active Shooter" course this weekend

Don't know all that is involved but am really excited to learn.  This course requires that I (everyone) have successfully completed five previous courses.

Who is teaching the class and what is the goal from an education perspective...eg is this to teach you the run/hide/fight strategy if you are a victim, or the first responder process for LE?

One of the guys who I worked 20+ years was a firearms instructor, helped teach incident command and active shooter training.  He was offered a sweet job in the private sector and took early retirement.
Later he told us that his new company mandated active shooter training.  Apparently it was much different than what he had seen on the other side.  Run, hide, load the stapler!

Trainer is Mark Lucas here outside of Columbus, Ohio.  VERY experienced.  Taught the basics of run/hide/fight but he taught and we practiced triple-taps with him emphasizing headshots if at all possible as most of the bad guys are wearing protection now. 


The requirement for this course (with him) is 5 defensive/tactical courses with practice and certification.  So he said he admittedly taught a little more aggressive approach than FEMA advocates.  Definitely get your family safe first, hide if possible, but he said these shooters are now going room-to-room with the primary or sole intent to kill EVERYONE.  So, he advocated if you are confident enough, trying to take the shooter out MAY pose less of a risk than there already is.  Shooting data suggests anything to challenge a shooter is likely to slow him up or stop him from further action.


We practiced shooting on the move, using cover & conceal and engaging targets with head-shots as the top priority.  Had to hit over 75% of head shots from 25 feet or less and 90% of center mass shots on triple taps.  He has specific follow up shooting clinics to further practice and engage active shooters using all of the criteria taught in the class.


I am sure I am leaving out a ton.

Thanks for the follow-up.  Sounds like it was a great class.

I especially like the information about just ditching the old concept I was taught of two center mass, evaluate and then two center, one head if the threat persists.  I agree that in todays world it is fair to assume they target is armored and that CM shots are a distraction but will not stop the threat.

I also like the idea of shooting on the move, and of picking your time rather than waiting for time to pick you.

It looks like you got great training!  Face shooting an aggressor is probably the best route to make him regret some life choices.

Yes, a 180gr 10mm at 1300 fps will definitely ruin someone's day.

Consider this a question. Even if the active shooter is wearing protection would not a center mass hit with a 45 or 10 incapacitate him for at least a short time? That energy has to go somewhere and my understanding, perhaps wrong, is that it will be absorbed by the body of the person wearing the kevlar or whatever and that will probably put him down, although not permanently, allowing a less hurried follow up.
