Ruger SR1911 down-up grade

Really like my SR1911 10mm.  Runs like a top and easy to conceal.  But that rear "BoMar style" sight is not the thing for CCW.  Snag free it ain't.

Problem is the bomar cut is not completely standard, and there aren't a bunch of options for a fixed, snag free sight.  I ended up ordering a Harrison Design HD-001S:



The other option I could identify was the 10-8 Precision Modular Rear Sight.  And while I saw some possible advantage to that sight, it was nearly twice the money, and I didn't see it being even 10% better.

I will post some updates when the sight arrives and some after pics once I get it installed on my Ruger.

I'm curious as to how this works for you.  Ruger has pigeon holed the 10mm as a target pistol. I'd be mightily tempted to buy a second one if they offered a Novak sighted model.

I will post a picture tonight, but it hangs off the back of the slide a bit.  Not sure I am thrilled.  If I had a milling machine I would true it and then trim about .125" off the back and then dimple it for some white dots, but I have no milling machine.

I look forward to seeing how it came out, sqlbullet.  I think this is a better option than the Bomar if I ever get the chance to hunt with mine.

Dang...I forgot about the picture.

I actually couldn't stand the way it looked and changed it back.  I will put HD fixed back on this weekend and snap a shot.

Maybe it's a "kit" and they left enough metal so you can machine it to look like the stock photo you posted?

I'd contact the manufacturer and ask about that.  It looks like the dovetail is in the wrong spot.

I think the Ruger uses the LPA sight cut.  That's usually what Manufactures mean when they say "Bo-Mar Style" rear sight. 
Back in the day, it was the cheaper alternative to Bo-Mar.  It looks like a real Bo-Mar but it's just different enough it didn't infringe on the Bo-Mar patent.

Yeah.

Other than the overhang, it is a solid fixed rear sight with a nice cocking ledge.  I honestly go back and forth about whether I want it on the gun.  I also may just file it back some and then re-do the lines and re-parkerize it.  It will still have a bit of gap at the front, but I think I could live with that if the rear lined up a little better.

Perhaps I just found my project for tonght.

Well, I did it.



I cut it back flush the the frame, then recut the angle, a little steeper than before.  I used a checkering file to re-cut the anti-glare grooves in the sight face, then cleaned up all the edges with a fine file.

Degreased good, polished the ends of the dovetail where I had marred it a bit, and dropped it in the parkerizing tank for 20 minutes.  Soaked in some oil and re-installed.  Took about an hour and fifteen minutes.

I like it much better now.
