How do you ship a handgun to an out of state FFL?

When selling a handgun online how do you ship to an FFL designated by a buyer? Everything I have read indicates that all shippers require that anyone shipping a handgun must be an FFL holder. I tried a couple of local dealers and I was unable to find anyone with any interest in getting involved it a private transfer. Any ideas?

Short version is that USPS will not allow an un-licensed person to ship a handgun.  Fed Ex and UPS will allow this, but it must be shipped express/overnight.

Some FFL's wont' accept a shipment from a non-license holder as well, but most will.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did not read far enough in the UPS requirements. After the first couple of lines said only from dealers I did not read the rest. Will check into that. Fed Ex is really spotty here. I get incoming with no problems but outgoing is only through Office Depot.

if you have to go thru Office Depot you might be in for a problem. I have tried to ship firearms thru those "UPS stores". 2 different ones wouldn't do it. I had to take it to the main terminal 25 miles away.

You can put it in a usps shipping box and print the label at home. Drop into a drop box and off it goes.. If it were me I would charge the buyer the FFL fee and get them to ship it for me.

You might be able to find an FFL that will ship it through the mail (USPS) - otherwise, you are stuck with FedEx or UPS. UPS says it must go overnight, but you can ship it 2nd day. Back in the 1980s, you could ship standard UPS ground, but their workers stole a lot of guns. I had a S&W revolver disappear for a few days. They found it after I said it was a gun. The package "falls off" the conveyor and gets "lost". Somehow the UPS workers memorized the address of some gun companies and know which packages to steal. One thing they use to do was create another label with an address to a different location then slap it over the existing label. The new label has a different address and different UPS number. The package disappears and no one knows where it went.

So far I am leaning toward FedEx but I am not sure about Office Depot either. I guess I could arrange a pick up by thier driver. Waiting now for the buyer to finalize the purchase.

DO NOT DO THIS

If you get caught, you can be fined and go to prison for two years for this action.  Oh, and lose your firearms rights forever.

Quote
Whoever knowingly deposits for mailing or delivery, or knowingly causes to be delivered by mail according to the direction thereon, or at any place to which it is directed to be delivered by the person to whom it is addressed, any pistol, revolver, or firearm declared nonmailable by this section, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

I think many people think this is just USPS policy, and if they get past the gatekeeper there is no big deal.  This is not the case.  As quoted above, federal law prohibits shipping of firearms by USPS unless you are a licensed FFL.

Ever heard of Form 1058?
You armchair internet lawyers are awesome.
As I stated its just easier for me to take it to my FFL and have him ship it, but YOU CAN SHIP IT YOURSELF provided it is going to an FFL.

You mean a form 1508? The one that starts off "The undersigned is a manufacturer of firearms or bona fide dealer therein..."? No, I am not signing that.

Which one?  Intent to Levy (IRS) or Application for Training (Army Reserve and National Guard).

I am not giving legal advice, or playing armchair lawyer.

And I never said you couldn't ship it yourself.  You just have to use a common carrier, not the USPS.

And the form you meant to reference, USPS 1508, states in BOLD at the top "This form can only be used by manufacturers or dealers of firearms"

Ridgerunner665

It is far easier to just let an FFL ship it...

Cheaper too... Mine charges $20.

I haven't found one willing to ship in my area. My buyer appears to have bailed any way. I will hit the gun show this weekend and then check into Gun Broker first of the week. I have several to move and they apparently arrange FedEx shipping through the website. Thanks for the replies.
