Hunting pistol choice

I am going to get a 10mm pistol to hunt deer with in Indiana. I can not make up my mind on which one to get.

I am torn between the SR1911, G40 or G20. I already own two Glocks Andover 1911, so I am familiar with both platforms.

I read a lot about changing barrels on the Glocks, is this a necessity for hot hunting rounds? Would the Ruger need different parts?

I feel like I would be more accurate with the 1911, but at the short ranges I would limit myself to I do not think it is a huge issue.

What do you prefer? Thanks for any feedback!

I preffer glock myself but you cant go wrong with a 1911 if you get a good one. Its all up to you and what your most comfortable with and what your willing to spend.

If its a hunting pistol... Get the G40, no question.

The combination of easy installation of a red dot, longer barrel options (mine has a 7" barrel), magazine capacity, and standing up to the hottest 10mm ammo make it a no brainier.

My G40 is 100 yard accurate... But only with the red dot.

I do not see how you can go wrong with any of your listed choices After all, we are only talking about whitetail deer. Standard factory ammo (like Hornady 180gr XTP) will easily harvest them if you do your part. IMO the difference in sights is greater than the difference in handguns. And different people do better with different sights. Depends on the person.

But.... if I had to fall to one side or the other, I am with Ridgerunner on this one. The G40 is a great hunting handgun. But then, I am a Glock guy and not a 1911 guy so clouds of Glock Kool-Aid cloud my vision. Still... all your listed choices are good ones.

I own both platforms you mentioned above.

The RMR on my 40 certainly have it as a longer range gun than my Remington R1 6" 1911.

Out to 50 yards off hand I shoot both very well and then the other conveniences or preferences come to light. I love the 1911 platform and actually off hand shoot it better than my Glock 20 SF or my Glock 40. But from steady rest the 40 wins the accuracy battle. The 1911 is easier to carry than the model 40 but in chest holster it's close enough neither wins over the other in that department. Red dots are great sights but they are battery operated and there is always that possibility of failure. Open sights rarely fail. I think either would be an excellent choice and like I said I have both platforms use them both as the mood dictates.

For me it would depend upon what sights you intend to use....open/iron sights then I would go with a 6" long slide optuon....if optics/red dot then the extra length is not needed for accuracy.

Weight can come into play, a heavier gun will help control the "hot" loads but you will have to carry it all day.

Capacity can also be a factor, some want more to make sure they have plenty of ammo--others say if you need a double stack for hunting then you need to practice more.

For some, cost comes into play--- for those guys, the glock's seem to be the best value for the money.

If you want the option of "customization" then the 1911's seem to have more options.

Which one is more accurate in your hands is really the question

I have both the Glock 20 and a Rock Island double stack in 10mm.
I'm also from Indiana and will be taking my rock to the woods.

I ended up getting the Ruger. Got it yesterday, haven't even had a chance to shoot it yet.

Based on some reports here by Ridgerunner665 I ordered the 7" Barrel for my G40 I am really looking forward to wringing it out this weekend. It's not really a velocity thing but it cannot hurt as much as an accuracy thing.

I got it today and can only say WOW I had Lone Wolf on this model 40 and had some nic groups but threw that 7" on and shot some 200 grain cast off hand at 30 yards the groups are absolutely fantastic. Cut the group size in half. So I am impressed with the 7" from KKM. I will get some comparative velocity data this weekend.

This makes a lot of sense. It's optics ready. It has a six inch barrel which is a minimum in some states. My personal favorite is that it is a polymer frame. I found out one very cold day that steel frames are best keep in the warmth of the body. Carrying the pistol at the ready after a long cold sit makes for one cold hand unless you have thick gloves on your shooting hand which I almost never do while handgun hunting.
