How about these Hornady action pistol bullets for hogs?

Hornady makes a 200 grain hollow point that they say is for action shooting.  If you read the description it says they are the XTP without the cuts in the jacket to aid in expansion.

I would use them for hogs. Any opinions on these?

What I really want is the XTP Flat Point.  They are just like the HP but with a smaller opening. Most people don't know they exist.  I have them for my 357 carbine but have not been able to find them for 10mm.

I personally wouldn't use them on hogs. They are tough critters and hornadys ammo is anemic in the energy department. I'd recommend something from DT or Underwood.

These are hand loads so I can make them as hot as needed. Or do you mean energy transfer?

What do you plan to shoot them out of? 
The Hornady 200gr XTP loaded by Underwood works great against hogs in my Glock 20.

the "FP" version of the xtp is only available in the .357" 125 grain and 158 grain bullets --- the FP version is  intended to be used in carbine rifles with much more speed (up to 1800fps) than pistols but can still be used in a pistol with little to no expansion

for your reference, in .401--the XTP expansion thresholds are
155= 850-1300fps
180=750-1450fps
200=700-1200fps

I would think the 180 xtp would expand and still hold together well for hunting at pistol speeds with no problems

a guy over on another forums gel tested the 200gr HAP at 1153fps, it had 19.4" penetration, retained 198gr, and had an expansion size of .442" with 1 "petal" expanding out to .623" -- it tumbled in the gel block so it might work for hog hunting
to compare, the 180xtp pushed at 1290fps penetrated 13.25", retained 175grains, minimum expansion was .636" ans maximum was .898" at the pedals

Hornady does not list any expansion velocities for the HAP as they only list it as a target bullet




just saw you are going to use them in an AR chassis--- what length barrel?

a 16" barrel gets about 100-150 fps more than a 6" barrel in testing ( http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/10mm.html )so I would guess that with handloads you may reach around 1400fps with a 200grain

if you want penetration with no expansion, try the 200grain hardcast bullets from Montanna, beartooth, buffalo, grizzly, underwood, or doubletap

probably only pick up 50fps over a 6" barrel then-- XTP or hardcast would be my choice, I personally wouldn't  "tinker" with the HAP unless you already have them on hand --but thats just me

I emailed Hornady a few months ago asking them about using the 200 grain HAP for better penetration than the XTP. They responded saying the performance would be better with the XTP. I assumed they meant a wider wound channel with the XTP than the HAP. I loaded up 50 200 grain XTPs and 50 200 grain Montana Bullet Works WFNPB loads. I have no doubt the hardcast will outpenetrate the XTP but the XTP ain't no slouch either. I guess it depends on what you want...expansion or penetration.

You could also downsize some 41 magnum bullets like the 215gr swift a-frame!

Federal does not sell bullets for reloading...you can find some federal Pulled bullets sometimes though --- I have seen gold dot, hst, hydra shock, fusion, trophy bonded and a few others before from various "pulled bullet" vendors but they are hit or miss on what or when you can find them.

Keep an eye on Rocky Mountain Reloading and American Reloading websites.  They have various Federal pulled bullets come through pretty often.
