Ruger SR1911 10MM First Range Visit

If there is a modern cartridge that has a cult like following and yet heavily underrated it would be the 10MM. This Ruger SR1911 in 10MM after my first range trip reconfirms my membership to the cult.

While out on the range for the first time time with the Ruger SR1911 in 10MM. The Ruger was 100% reliable with the 100 rounds of factory and reloads I put down range. I did shoot some of my favorite reloads across the chronograph out of the SR1911, 135gr Nosler hollow point and 200gr Nosler hollow point loaded on top of Alliant Bluedot powder. The Ruger SR1911 is exactly what you would expect from Ruger, cast frame, tight slide to frame fit, no frills features like ambi safety and very reliable. If you are a 10MM fan like I am this is a must have, if you are curious about 10MM and want a cost effective, nicely refined ultra reliable 1911 in 10MM look no further than the Ruger SR1911.

Correction in the video I mentioned CFE Pistol, I did not have any of these left and had to revert back to my Bluedot loads, unfortunately I had CFE pistol on the brain lol.

Very nice video, thanks for posting it. I (and I think most of us) appreciate the review on the new Ruger 10mm.

It looked like it handled your 1500 fps 135 grain reloads very well. I guess the next question is, how do we think it will handle Underwood?

Test fire a 1911 style first before deciding.  For my big hands it's not a very comfortable platform.

Awesome, glad it worked out. This is the first, "in the wild" report on the 10mm Ruger i have seen. That 135 gr load is what I prefer in 10mm.

The Ruger 1911 10mm is in hand today. Pretty nice. Trigger is good, but as always I will take care of some polishing to bring it up to my standards. The take-down is a little funky, but had no issues with it. Fit and finish pretty awesome, very well machined and everything regarding accuracy potential is as it should be. My only gripe, which has already been brought to light, is the grip safety. It's just a plain sloppy a fit. Yeah, it works, but a little QC here could have made lots of difference to me.

I hope to get it to the range very soon, and I'll bet this thing is going to be a tack driver. The only items I can see replacing are the grip panels with something more awesome, and do a trigger job to get rid of the take-up grit (which is really minimal). The break is awesome on mine. Very clean, but a little polishing can't hurt there either. It's going to feel awesome.

So, 8+1 of 10mm Underwood is my idea of serious power, and I'm a fan of the 155 grain bullets for most any need. I have some Underwood 220 grain Hard Cast, which is what should be carried by everyone in the wild where bear or any big predators exists. I'd carry two 8 round mags, for 16 or 17 rounds total, which is a bit more than my Stock II, but the Ruger feels much slimmer to pack in comparison. I'll just need to learn how to swap mags like a pro...

My daily carry is also a Ruger, the LC9S Pro, and use the Federal HST, so I'm surely a Ruger fan. It's going to be hard to beat the Tanfoglio Stock II overall, but I think just from the minimal handling time I've had, I trust the Ruger will be a great competitor. The biggest difference to me? I happen to think that the Stock II double/single action is the best option for safety. You can always carry cocked and locked like the 1911 platform, but the safer method is to carry in double action mode for the first shot. A long, hard trigger pull for the first shot, but that makes it safe as hell. And once you're feeling like carrying ala 1911 style of cocked and locked, you can choose to do that as well. Options!

The Ruger's recoil spring is 'stiff.' It's pretty much what I would do in tuning any 10mm. The heavier the spring where the cycling actually works is the best choice. If that fails, just work your way down until it's reliable. It can get a bit tricky, but shooter's eventually figure the voodoo out. I'm looking forward to getting to the range with this!

Mr. Revolverguy, that's a heck of a nice video you did. Great presentation of information and range performance. I will be eager to see what tweaking handloads will do for accuracy potential with this new Ruger. Sure tempted to bring one home.

You know, for the first time in my life, I can't keep track of all the 10mm offerings in my puny little mind.  That's a good thing.  This Ruger is definitely on my list - but, I'll admit, I'm kind of half waiting to see if that 10mm XD(M) materializes, since it fills a slot I don't have.

Yea, that was good video, wish mr.revolverguy would have shared his load data, but he didn't know if the 135's were loaded with Blue Dot or CFE pistol...

I knew what the load data was just chose not to share I just mixed my words up. My favorite loads are with bluedot my second favorite pistol powder is cfe pistol.

I want one just because I love Rugers. They handle over SAAMI spec better than any gun made. I pushed a 250gr at 2840 from a 24" Ruger Mk-II rifle, and yes I had witnesses and a video. All 4 of my Rugers I pushed to the wall and past and never had any trouble.

I'd take one of these 1911's, add a 24# spring and try to get 1300+ from a 200 grain bullet. Might get to 1350 before the brass fails, all according to chamber support.

Revolverguy, could you take some close ups with the barrel out of a round in the chamber?

Excellent review Mr.revolverguy. I like the format and your delivery. It's very informative for people like myself that are on the fence trying to make a choice.  I am looking seriously at another 10mm. (my first - Sig P220 Hunter) I love my 1911s and the Ruger is near the front for my choices. Like others, however,  I am intrigued by the potential of an XD 10mm but I'm getting a bit antsy. The Glock, of course, is a solid go-to that I haven't ruled out.

I'll pass on any more HS2000's. Made in Croatia just isn't reassuring. I'd rather have a damaged Glock than a new XD. But that's my $0.02 worth.
