Mossberg Shockwave

This new 'shorty' from Mossberg, looks like winner.  Meets BATFE regulations as a regular firearm, at around 26 inches.  Handles 2 3/4" shot, or slugs.  Five-shot capacity, with one in the spout.  Absolutely, devastating at 30 feet.  Priced to go at around $425.00 dollars.

Remington already has a version and I won't be surprised if others don't soon. I bet Tubbs would be happy with it.

Both these guns are interesting IMO.  Capacity for the heavy-barreled Mossberg is greater than the Remmy.  Yet the Remmy handles 3" shells, opposed to the Mossberg's 2 3/4" fodder.  Price differential is negligible, I would love to see Ithaca do an approved shorty.  I do own, both full-size versions of these scatterguns.  I like the Mossy's safety location, since I'm a southpaw.

Great gun and for its intended purpose is very effective. I have run well over 250 rounds of various ammo through this gun. I mounted a Green Laser and shell saddle.

It appears when you put them on the timer, they aren't as effective as an 18" riot gun, even in the hands of a user who practices with them.

To clear my house or maneuver to vacate it is great option and not as identifiable as a full size riot gun. They have there uses. I ran some slugs at 40 yards with the green laser and kept the shots all in the boiler room of full man silhouette target.  I they both have there place in defensive situations.

I like mine. I have removed the strap and replaced it with a hasty sling. I find no need for the hand strap. The best patterns are coming from 3" 000 Buck Fed Prem and 3" #1 Buck Win Super X. I like one ounce slugs, but I don't like the faster I ounce slugs. I do not like #4 Buck in 3" as it has massive recoil. I have been testing various loads and have just picked up the PDX buck and ball load and the Hornady Critical Defense 8 pellet 00 Buck load.

In case you missed it, the purpose of the strap is not to carry the gun.  It is to keep your hand from slipping in front of the muzzle resulting in a nasty and permanently debilitating hand wound.

If your sling use adequately serves this purpose, then great.  If not, you may want to re-think not having that safety strap.

I'm a relative newbie to the pump shotgun with only 25 years of experience. I read the manual about the purpose of the strap and the safety warnings.

Complete lack of muzzle awareness  and trigger finger discipline isn't going to be fixed by six inches of Cordura. That's a lawyer satisfaction and nothing more.

For my purposes the setup I have is ideal.

I have been a 870 guy since my earliest days shooting shotguns... Having taken a few defensive shotgun "courses" I like both platforms, just prefer the Remington.
When this came out, I was pretty excited. Like most of you I have had a pistol grip shotgun. They are small but have limitations. I have shot guns with this grip style on a Ithaca and it is most definitely better for recoil control, but can make reaching the trigger more difficult for some people on some models. IMHO the Remington is better than the Mossberg in this regard.

I decided to wait for Remington and buy that over the 590. In the weeks between I was reading and had the opportunity to shoot a shock wave with mini shells... SOLD! For me its a GAME CHANGER! These are NO powder puff shells!! They offer Slugs & Buck shot and can 100% be reliably fired from the 590 but NOT the Remington. These combined with the shock wave grip makes this very controllable even from slighter build people.

Last week I was set to buy the Mossy. I got a call form a friend with a Remington 14 and Jeff Quinn offered his video report on the Remington.

In looking thru the safe, I found a Remington Wingmaster that had not been used a more then a few years. Its not going to fill this role. I ordered a Raptor grip and Magpul for end. Mine wont be 14" but it wont cost me 400$ either. For now it will fill this bill.

I did but the adapter to make the Mossberg function with the mini shells and a Mag Pul forend for the 590 too. (I have since learned it will not fit with out modification )

It has a small or limited use gun. But in those areas it fits the bill nicely.

Forrest, please understand I meant no offense.  I just new I would feel bad if it later came out you were new to guns and had suffered an injury.

I agree that the bigger factors are muzzle awareness and discipline.

On a related note, we are kinda kin, as my first name is "Forest".  Glad you are here and that you are enjoying your mossberg!

It frustrates me that this device is what he have stooped to in order to protect stupid people from themselves. There should have been more mention of muzzle discipline and trigger finger discipline. Treat it like a snubnosed revolver kind of thing.

What I have learned with this gun is that it is incredibly handy. Slung muzzle up there is a potential to flip the safety off if you forget about it being on the shoulder? and sit down on a tractor. The safety needs to be bevelled on both sides from the middle flat back to the tip. I just rolled the edge a little but preserved the steps to positively disengage the safety. This prevents it from acting like a crude saw blade during recoil with sweaty hands. The loading port can also stand a bevel if you intend to shoot it a lot especially reloading rapidly. I just saw no reason for it to be so sharp of an edge especially since that edge interacts with parts of my thumb that don't have calluses. I use the weak hand reloading technique for this shotgun.

I shoot this gun just about every weekend. I have already gone through two cases of the the Federal LE buckshot with flight control wad. I absolutely love this gun for home defense and get better every outing. Shoulder mounted certainly has its place and this gun will never replace the untility of that platform. But this gun is dandy I hope they come W out with 20ga 3" chamber next. for now they cannot keep up with demand.
