Should I...

I have a question...

But first off, I am a little bit of a collector, I dont do it for resale and I dont do it to cash in one day. Generally if I have it I shoot and use it.

I have a nice early G20 UL XXX sn so its a late 1990 or early 1991 gun. As I understand it the very first ones where July of 1990. I hunt with it and shoot it regularly. I run my heavy loads thru it as well as two after market barrels in it.

Last year I acquired a Trijicon RMR site  It was unexpected, kinda fell in my lap so I grabbed it. I looked around and spent about 75$ on a base that was no gun smithing. Its working fine, NO ISSUES. BUT, I dont or better worded I am unable to have sites with it.  So should it fail even if removed I have no sites... Not huge, but enough to bother me.

Yesterday I discovered a company local to me does these RMR cuts and has been doing them for a few years even making there own line of covers. A package deal is a bit over 100$.

My question is is the value of this gun such that I should or shouldn't do this. What would YOU do if it was yours?

As I said, I have them to use my guns, I dont look at them longingly in my bathrobe, Cognac and a cigar...  :o ;D

IMHO...

Your tools are only diminished by things that make them less useful to you.  If cutting the slide makes it more useful to you, cut away.

That said, I might make a call to Glock to see if I could buy a slide, and how much that would be.  If I could pick up a slide that was compatible for a reasonable price, it might influence my decision.

Looks really good.

What did that machine work cost you if you don't mind sharing.

They went up a lil since last year. But not allot and they have a special including the cover all for 125$.

Those pics are not actually mine, I emailed them yesterday and was sent those. I'll likly drop off my naked slide this weekend.  ;D

Just called... apparently they are running behind. I'm not really in a rush, just impatient to see my slides so I can go shoot them. I got apologies and was offered machined slide covers as gesture for the delay witch is very nice of them.

I will call back in two weeks. Ill post up with pics if photo bucket fixes there shit...

Lol! I never figured it out. I tried using it a couple years ago and it was lame. The website always says everything is too large.

Well....  I called again last night. It been two more weeks. Apparently they are still not completed. Ill give another week and call again...

Each time I get apologies & lip service. First time I called was 6 weeks in, I was offered 20% off.
Last time I was promised slide covers. I had called at four weeks in requestion the covers. NOT looking for slides. This time, No apologies, it almost felt like I was inconveniencing them by calling... I hope it was just because I caught them at a bad time.

I sure hope the work is acceptable, as I dont think Ill be a returning customer. I told them I have two more to do too. (Plus two friends that are waiting to see mine before they commit.

Ill need to do some
More research and watch for TIMES needed, instead of just looking at the quality of the work. This guy was well liked and even proclaimed very short turn around times. I was initially told two weeks! But they where moving so two went to four wit

I hoped to have pics to post... Ill call them back next Friday the 5th.

Well... Now he says I will get them at cost.  :o

Looks like ill be waiting at least another week!!!  This week he was talkative and explained whats happening. IMHO crux of the issue is he is young and focusing on the move and set up of his first shop than he is on completing existing orders.

Being young, the first time we met and I handed over the slides, he explained all his companies and times as well as what it takes to do everything... So now, his "excuses" don't hold water. BUT, He does excellent work and is thorough. He keeps offering $$ off and has already thrown in free slide covers in case I need to remove the dots for irons only.

I have another slide (A G35) that I really would like to have milled too... BUT Now we are solid into 3 gun season so I have no more time to give it up. I guess I will decide when I final see the work and if he is good to his word.

Well another week has passed...

MY SLIDES ARE DONE AND I HAVE PICKED THEM UP!!!

All is well and the work is quality! Man was true to his word on costs and supplying a cover plate for the G20. He says he will do a Venom plate for cost and I have no reason to doubt that.

I mounted all dots and all sites. One was very tight in its dovetail but 30 minutes carefully fitting the site and its now perfect. A second was juat a touch looser than I like. But I was easilly able to "upset" the base for secure fit. The last one was perfect.
Overall satisfied and happy!

Overall of coarse.
I said for the start I did not "need" them, I just wanted them. :)  I also have to admit, NOT having my beloved 23 cost me buying a new Gen4 27.  :o ;D ;D I had other guns I could have carried, but I did not have a 27.

Then a "deal" came along on a G35 that I couldn't turn down. So, I bought that too, well traded for that actually. I swapped a Browning HI-Power I hadn't even looked at in a couple years.
I almost called up and cancelled the work to the 23 and gave him the 35. But it came with wonderful Dawson steel fiber optic adjustable sites. AND I did have a no gunsmith mount for the glock.

Today I shot the 20, 19 & 23 and I gotta say that that 23 is still the perfect carry gun, only made better with the addition of the Vortex Venom. My regret is that the sites are just a lil low for true co-witness. You can see just the tops, so while usable, not ideal.
The 19 wears a Vortex VIPER and that site is thinner so the Trijicon nite suppressor sites co witness perfectly.
Just as they do on the G20. But the G20 got all black sites no inserts at all.

I was shooting sub 2" 25 yard groups with all guns within about ten rounds each. All re sited flawlessly.
