Fed as SD ammo

Recently I shot some Federal 180 grain trophy bonded JSP rounds those seem to hit pretty darn hard and stay fast. It seems that these would do decent penetration in just about anything. video on YouTube show them doing about 16 a half to 17 inches of penetration. This might not be a bad  self-defense load. It carries I think about 650 foot pounds energy. I have read about some of you guys testing this, but as a redily available ,factory load, this seems pretty good..will be out of a glock 29. It is however, kinda pricey.

They will likely work well, but you can also risk a pass through with a non or less expanding bullet.  Good for woods protection and hunting although I'd be happier to have that bullet weighing 200 grains and loaded to 1225 FPS from a 5" BBL.

The 180 grain Gold Dot or Sig V'Crown HP's would be a great SD choice.  There are a few 165 grain offerings that would also fill the SD roll.

I've looked at the Sig v-crown but I had an ammo rep tell me they weren't opening up very well... I have not tested them or shot them yet but I'm sure there's gel test somewhere. Winchester silvertips are way too hard to find. And as far as the gold dot 180s from my position right now unfortunately places like Underwood are not available. Maybe the 180 xtp from hornady but it's slow. Must be a major ammo manufacturer,  trying to sneak in underwood or hpr.
