My G20 likes the Sierra 180 and Longshot. Im wondering if that bullet is safe/effective to use on whitetail or similar sized hogs. I havent chron'ed  the load but the same charge w/ 180XP was a bit over 1330. I just wonder  if the bullets too soft at that velocity. MD requires 700 FPE.

Should be just fine for deer!

You'll just have to ask the first deer in range for it's opinion.

Don't forget the 6 inch barrel requirement also.
Those numbers you gave are over the muzzle energy requirement, but not by much.
Mass:180(gr)
Velocity:1330(fps)
Energy:707(ft.lbf)

From looking in my book to get those 180's anywhere near 1300fps with Longshot you've got to be well over max published load. Max is showing 8.2 grains@1150fps.
Not saying it's not possible to get there but I'd try other powders to push it out that far. Good luck with your quest and the quagmire of Maryland's BS?

Looks like on Hodgdon's website they use the Sierra JHP 180gr over 9.5gr Longshot. Out of a 5" Barrel its showing velocity of 1287fps. Theoretically you should be above 1300 with a 6" barrel.

I have found that AA#9 and my 6" KKM precision barrel for the G20 is a match made in heaven. With 180gr XTP or Gold Dot, I followed the Hornady 9th edition loads and worked up to the max

14.9gr Accurate #9. I had single digit extreme spread of like 6 or 8fps and achieved velocity of mid 1380's, which puts it around 750~760 fpe.

The Buffalo Bore 180 JHC made 1374 FPS from a 5" Colt Delta Elite in Ballistics by the Inch testing:

http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/10mm.html

According to our pull-down data this was with Power Pistol and was well over the book max load.

That said, the DE is well known to have poor case head support, and it handled the load without concerns being raised by the BBTE team.

Looking at our tested pull down ammo...Shadow tested a Trident 180 JHP load of 9.0 grains of longshot that made 1282 fps out of his 1006 5".  (http://10mm-firearms.com/factory-10mm-ammo-pull-downs/trident-180gr-zero-jhp-pull-down/)

Also, Atomic ammo 180 JHP loaded with 8.6 grains made 1202 fps.

These data points all indicate that working up you should easily make 1300 fps from a 6" barrel with a 180 grain JHP.

I find very similar with #9 and a 165 Sierra. VERY consistent velocities & good velocity with 15.3g for 1360 & 1390fps for my 4.6 & 6" barrels in the G20.

I have fired them thru my 29 but not over chrony.

Warmer weather I'll shoot some jugs. I am VERY happy with the accuracy and consistency!

As have I, accuracy has been fantastic and velocities seem to be very consistent.

The Sierra bullet is only a few thousandths larger than the xtp's. I'd say to reduce from max by 10-15% and work back up.

Hornady 9th edition lists IMR 800x at 10.1gr. this load has a little more spread 1430-1458 fps from the 6 inch barrel.

That load is stout and I'd recommend a 22lb recoil spring.
