Diving in to the 10

I've dodged around them for years, having Glocks in every other flavor. I've finally decided to get a Glock 29. I was never as accurate shooting the 20/21 as I am with the 29/30.

This will be my primary CCW. Is Underwood my best bet for self defense ammo? Am I making a good move going from carrying 9mm's and 357 SIGs to the big 10? How much velocity am I giving up with the 29 vs the 20?

I hope you guys don't mind helping a newbie out and I'm sorry for so many questions.

Tic-Glock, Welcome to the forum!  The difference in velocity from G-20 to G-29 can vary depending on several factors, most of which is burn rate of the powder being used.  So it can be anywhere from 30 to 100 feet per second...still not a big deal!

When using the 10mm for conceal carry, just understand that your surroundings can vary...size of the engagement area, amount of people in an area, climate and a host of other factors.  The recoil can play into follow up shots, concerns of missed or pass through shots as with any other calibers.  Proficiency comes with practice, and knowing your own limitations.

Only you can answer the question of moving from what you carry now to the 10mm platform.

Well I did it. Went to my local shop and ordered a 29 SF. I set it up as layaway, Christmas gift from me to me. Plus this way, the wife doesn't notice as much lol

Carry ammo, what is your recommendation? I'm thinking Underwood 180gr Gold Dot, as I only carry Gold Dots now.

I am one excited kiddie lol

Gold dots will do for 2 legged targets.  Congrats.... You  hear a lot of of naysayers say you must have this or must have that, or better "this penetrates to much" or   "that doesn't penetrate enough" and lastly "that doesn't expand enough or correctly in 10mm"

Forget the naysayers.   Ive never heard man or beast say "Getting shot with a 10mm wasn't that bad"

:)) :))

I'll get some Buffalo Bore outdoorsman for time in the woods, probably in a G20 mag.

Watch the tnoutdoors9 video where he tested the 10mmp 180gr Gold Dot from Underwood. That Gold Dot was peeled back to the point of breaking!

I need to get another MTAC holster, or do the Alien Gear holsters work just as good?

Congratulations on the G29. Great little gun that makes a big boom! :)

For carry, I'm partial to Hornady XTP's, but right now I have PMC Bronze 170jhp's since I got a good deal on a bulk purchase.

The 200gr XTP's by Underwood looks nice. 200gr too much for social rehabilitation?

Are you kidding? The more the merrier and welcome to our club.  :D

I have a G29 too and I carry Uw 10mm 200 XTP but I have Hornady 10mm 170 XTP for softer shooting loads. With heavy slug the velocity loss is not as bad as with the light round. For the Uw 200 I think around 1130 or better (of 1250). Around 560 pounds of energy (200 at 1130 fps).

It'll smack the baddies around for sure.  8)
How powerful is 10mm? Well, see those craters on the moon?

No, I don't think so. At the speed that Underwood drives them, they will penetrate a bit less and expand more. I think the Underwood 180gr Gold Dot load would perform exceptional out of a 29. I think it is a bit over driven out of a 20, but that bullet is tough and tends to hold together when driven too fast.

I really like the Georgia Arms 180gr Gold Dot load. Intercooler tested it out of his EAA with 4.75" barrel and saw 1220fps. Probably 1150 or so out of a 29? Another great load is Hornady's Critical Duty. It is an excellent barrier blind load. One of the reasons I really like the Georgia Arms load as well as the Critical Duty, is that they are loaded to a level that functions out of my 20 no matter how I grip it. If I use an extremely light weak (one hand) grip it is still 100% reliable. If I use heavier loads, they function fine, but are grip sensitive. For a defensive load, I want to throw grip out of the equation.

I'm down to 165 or 180gr Gold Dot from Underwood. 1400 or 1300 advertised velocity. I'm curious if anyone has chronoed them from a 29.

you're welcome Tic.  :D

You haven't chronoed the 175gr Critical Duty have you? They didn't open in Lucky Gunners test of the 40 Loads.
