Does anyone here have any first hand experience with using the 180 Gold Dot on whitetail deer? I found a box of component bullets in my stash and thought about loading them up over Blue Dot or 800X to try on a deer should the opportunity arise. I have a few hundred 180XTPs loaded and ready to go but I am one of those guys that like to try new things.

I can tell you I am using them this year for deer from my Glock 40 MOS.Loaded over a good dose of Longshot.

I have no experience hunting deer with a 10mm. We can't use semi-autos here in PA.

I did take a 160 pound sow hog with 2 shots behind the shoulder at 15 yards with Georgia Arms loaded 180 grain Gold Dots this past spring in South Carolina. One bullet was recovered, fully expanded, just under the hide on the opposite side when we dressed her out. The other penetrated completely and was not recovered.  The gun was a Gen 3 Glock 20.  The hog went only about 50 yards after the shots.

Working purely from memory here, which may not be correct, I think velocity was supposed to be in the mid 1200s. The only thing I know for sure is I couldn't tell any difference in recoil when compared with DoubleTap's 180 grain Gold Dot load that I bought recently.

Sure, one animal is not significant enough to make a realistic determination, but I was happy with the load's performance and would not hesitate to use it on hogs or deer.

Pumpkinheaver- I don't have 1st hand experience harvesting a deer with a handgun.
However, I have absolutely no doubt a 10mm 180 grain gold dot skipping along 1,275 to 1,150 feet per second through a deer's vitals will result in a freezer full of meat..  Unless you going after a 310+lbs Iowa corn feed bruiser with 12 points I wouldn't sweat it.
If you over rev the gold dot, it'll over expand and under penetrate but it you keep it in the 10mm gold dot sweet spot; they'll work like a charm.

Hey just in time....  a new clear ballistics gel test of Underwood 10mm 180gr Gold Dot...Enjoy

At 1300fps on cusp of almost running too fast but Oh yea, it'll do the trick just fine on reasonable sized deer.

Thanks for the report on your hog. I'm confident they will work. I have a bunch of the 180 XTP load I used to harvest a deer last year, I just like to try new things. I'd like to try the Sig v crowns I have as well.

The gel test is impressive. Obviously the deer around here don't wear denim but they do wear fur!!!!

I intend to load them to about 1200-1250FPS. Now to decide what powder to use. I have bluedot, 800X and BE-86 to choose from.
