I was looking at the 450 Bushmaster and had a thought. Has anyone necked it down to 10mm yet? I thinkthat would be a killer hunting round for an ar type rifle. WHat are the thoughts on this?

There is a 10mm SOCOM wildcat:

There were some fireworks on the thread about naming convention of cartridges, so leave that aside as you browse the thread.

Given that the only real meaningful difference between the SOCOM and the Bushmaster is the former takes rifle 45's (.458) and the latter takes pistol 45's (.451/2) and the goal is to neck down anyway, I think the 10mm SOCOM fits your bill perfectly.

It is a cool wildcat idea, but I don't like the way those big fat cartridges cost magazine capacity in the AR15.  I would rather see a 10mm-08 for the AR10 platform.  Still gets full mag capacity and could handle bullets from 135 gain up to 390 grain cast.

However, you hit a 450 vs 458 style quandary here.  There are far better suited bullets for these velocities available in .410" than in .400".  This would make me think that necking down to .410 would be a better choice, as the jacketed bullets for 41 magnum will better handle the velocity.  With leads to the question of the .416 bullets.

And I am on a tangent.  Take a look at the 10mm Socom thread.

Yep who other than Tony Rumore would do such a thing?  Glad he is one of our members and a 10mm fanatic!
He said he might rethink the production of the 10mm SOCOM... ;D

Someone may have mentioned this in the other thread:

Another .400 option.

Other than the initial interest and sundry B.S. that erupted over the 10mm SOCOM thread, there was really little interest after that.....we made two parts sets, shipped them out, and that was it for the 10mm SOCOM.

We also necked the 450 Bushmaster to .358, drew up a chamber print and was basically ready to go, but after posting it around on the web a bit, there was really no interest in that one either, so it's been shelved, still-born.

However, the .375 SOCOM is selling very well and we have no plans to drop it.  It's got legs and is going to be around for quite some time.

I currently own a 458 Socom and like the looks of this 375 Socom.

Yep the 458 SOCOM is popular with the wide availability of bullet weights and styles.  The same for the 375 SOCOM but the 10mm SOCOM lacked good bullet styles and sturdy bullets which was it's downfall.  Had her been spitzer pointed and boat tail 0.400" bullet that could have been a game changer in the long run...

Now Tony is showing yet another, the 358 BushMaster, this sort of fits well and there are a few 358" bullet to make it a good shooter.  The drawback of the 458 / 375 / 358 cartridges, are brass cases which are on the expensive side.  My limited experience with the 458 SOCOM shows things can get messed up as velocities and pressures are pushed...damaged bolt lugs, case rims and heads for example.

I'll have to weigh my concerns on what I want to consider.   :-\

I am loving my 358 Winchester AR-10.  I will have to check out the 358 SOCOM ballistics and see if I can download that far and still get reliable cycling. :P
