Need advice on which 10mm to get!

Hi there a newbie here. I plan to get a 10mm semi auto and been wanting one since they first came out. I think I figured out what I want, its torn between a few.

First off is the Glock 40, full 6" what I been looking for, and has optic mounts.

Next is a Glock 20 Gen4, I was thinking a lone wolf barrel then looking about around here I found a KKN Precision 6" barrel that has a MELONITE option!  Does any one know if KNN P uses 416R or just 416, with meloniting my cold weather concerns would be nullified though.

My concern for the standard gloc barrel is that it doesn't fully support the bullet, even though hammer-forged barrels are some of the most long lasting, that may cause problems with hotter loads. (I don't reload but I'd use the most powerful I could for bear).  Hence I was figuring I'd have to replace the barrel for hunting.  So a Glock 20 gen 4 seems a logical route to go and get a 6" hunting barrel.  A Glock 40 gives the option of optics and has an already 6" barrel I guess I could use till I got an up grade later on.

I need advice on what would be the most logical way to go.

Oh Purpose, hunting and in case big critters need some cronking.

The other 10mm I been looking at are Rock Island Armory 10mm. I was thinking just going with 5" barrel, are there any big difference's between a 5" and 6" for white tail hunting?

Also does any one know if a 6" KKN P's 1911 10mm barrels would work in a RIA 1911 10mm?

And any other advice and ideas would be helpful, this maybe my last chance to get a 10mm and I want to get it right.

One thing that may derail this it is a Super Redhawk in 454 caussul if I can find one available...

Between glock and rock island, i would not hesitate to go with glock... My gen 3 20 is one of my favorites. My 3 favorite semi autos are all glocks, so yeah i am little biased.  ;D

Have to say it just depends on how they fit your hand...  I shoot Glocks but don't care to shoot them.  I have a 19 and a 40 that only get shot a couple of times a year. Both are accurate but I just prefer shooting 1911s when it comes to semis.

Bought one of the RIA Combat Commander size 10mms this spring. Only issue I had was the slide sometimes locking open mid-magazine.  The last two times out, no problems at all.  Accuracy has been excellent.  For hunting you may want to look at their long slide...or the new Remington Long Slide Hunter. Both will be about a grand. I also have the PARA and the Remington is just a PARA with the Remington stamp on the slide. Also an excellent shooter.

If you want a 5", and can find one, look at the Kimber Stainless Target II.  Probably the most accurate 10mm of the four I have. Shooting at 100 yards I put 5 on a 10" gong and then the last three in the magazine on an 8"...same price as the long slides from the other makers...

I was reading...if I get a glock, should it be a Gen 3 or is a gen 4 good after jan. 1 2014?

I may have to get a biggest bang for the buck, but I'm getting that 10mm!

So far maybe a RIA one.  Found a few for sale that look good.

The Glock 40 (if Gen 4 is a good idea) would be 6" and cover the basic needs, this is for light practice and hunting and literal trouble shooting bad critters. (From coyote to black bear if needed).  General carry every day probably not an issue.

Or a Glock 20 gen 3? or Gen 4? And get a KNN P melnoite 6" for hunting? Or a lone wolf with a break later?

I saw those EAA ones, from what I read not much of a good idea?

You may can get a 20sf in gen 3, but the regular 20 gen 3 has not been made for a while now.

I found a site that has Gen 3 glock's in stock it.  It seems reputable.

No distributor has had any for nearly two years now i think, i had a buddy looking for me one and he struck out.
I would be suspicious of a site that has new ones that are not a sf model.

Impact Guns seems to have them in stock.

If everyday carry is not issue I would suggest the MOS Glock model 40. You can carry this gun with any number of excellent holster options out there.

1.) Good value
2.) Excellent reliability.
3.) Excellent velocity with the 6" Bbl.
4.) Excellent accuracy with increased sighting plain and optics options.
5.) High capacity with 14 round magazines.
6.) Lots of after market parts already available.
7.) It's a Glock ........  :D

I also have a RIA the 6" Model is fine gun for the money but understand it will be heavier and can be a little more particular about what ammo you feed it. Otherwise they are fine value and accurate firearms.

Between the 6" models, if their's a possibility of installing a small slide mounted red dot sight, then the Glock 40 MOS is the obvious choice.  Don't concern yourself with the factory barrel.  Most of the negative things you here are from people who don't own one.  I handload all my ammo but I would have no concerns with shooting the hotter stuff from Underwood, Double Tap, etc.

If your staying with open sights, It's a tougher choice as my RIA 6" Pro Match is built like a tank and is accurate enough even out to 100 yards for hunting.  (plus I'm a 1911 fan)

Their are also more holster choices for the Glock 40.  Even if they are a bit on the expensive side, at least they exist.  Holsters for a 6" 1911 are almost always a custom option.

Staying with open sights and throwing a standard 5" 1911 into the mix, That would be my choice hands down.  Out to 50 yards, without sand bags, I'm way more comfortable with my RIA FS Ultra.  I will admit, I'm a little biased as I've been shooting 1911's competitively for over 30 years. ;)
Not to mention the almost unlimited holster choices for a standard 5" 1911 and all the aftermarket support, it's the clear logical choice.  A close second would be a Glock 20.  Either a Gen 3 SF or the newer Gen 4 and speaking as a former gunsmith, Glocks just tend to work out of the box.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys!

All the info and experiences you had made things a lot clearer for a final decision.

That's the hard part the final decision but that's my problem!   ;D  I love these types of problems. 8)

You all helped me find the final options I selected will work. And then some like that Remington one.

If I had time to wait to get one I would...but this might be the last chance for me to get one.  From experience its best to get what one can that works even if its OK for the purpose and not having none at all!

Even if economics force a pared down decision at least I was given advice that still helps me.

And if any one else has any more opinions, options and ideas still would like to hear them.

How big is the grip size on a RIA single stack 45 and a double stack mag 45?

That RIA is very basic. If your like most, you upgrade the sights at least. I'm not a 1911 guru, I think milling is needed on a GI model to do that. Maybe an upgraded model would suit you better.
Nothing wrong with Glock 20 or 40 either.
