I had one friend that must be a Buddhist... didn't know it, but his responses:

-That looks like a woodrat.
I hope so much that you didn't kill it. Woodrats are naturally occurring rodents that are beneficial to our ecosystem and are in extreme decline thought MD. In fact I'm not there are any recent records for it in Cecil County

-But still the Buddhist in me is sad

-I don't want to get into a debate about compassion and the rights of sentient beings, but I'm troubled by you saying "I don't like to kill things that I don't have to..." I don't see why one would ever have to kill anything, but again, this is an ethical thing (and a spiritual one -for me) that I'm not interested in discussing at the moment.

Basically responding to me saying I don't get them here and this didn't look like a friendly. Also that I don't kill anything that I don't have to. In this instance putting my live trap out wasn't the better option.

Just a word of caution....
Rats are smart. They don't willingly expose themselves to danger, such as lingering in the open for any length of time. If one, or several are doing that, something is wrong, with the rats. Rabies and other communicable diseases can cause them to do that.

So can one that's already been poisoned but doesn't know it's dead yet.  Several years ago someone in our neighborhood had rats and I killed 2-3 in our garage that staggered in after getting into the poison.

  It must have been the only one. The latrine signs are totally gone on the deck and no signs of anything around the house.

   I got the rifle as a Christmas gift about three years ago and never fired it at anything live. We actually did do some target shooting on July 4th to test BB vs Pellets (pellets are much more accurate). I see now it is discontinued, but mine is this one and I use it just the way it come with iron/fiber sights:

Ha, I grew up with one of those in my hands!  Got it as a Christmas gift either 1979 or 1980 and that was when they were still using the pot metal "receiver".  That thing went all over our deer lease and all through our neighborhood (and the cops were never called on me AFAIK).  My Grandfather borrowed it in the mid-90s and finally wore it out killing squirrels in his backyard.  I was out of state when he bought a replacement for me and I was stunned to see the new ones were being made with plastic bodies.  It still works the same, probably shoots better and the 5 round pellet holder is a nice addition but I sure miss the heft of the old metal one.

Nice rat kill. I have a couple of spring powered BB guns. The Daisy model 25 might do in a rat at close range, but the Red Ryder would probably just give a rat a headache.  I would use my 5mm Silver Streak on a rat.  If I had rats.

Got into an interesting discussion with someone the other day that falls right in line with this. Only it pertains to Coyotes...

"You can't shoot the coyotes when they are in your yard..."

Actually, I can. I just have to use an Airgun, bow or crossbow, and have a Varmint permit. Since the passing of my Chow, I have been giving serious consideration to getting a .22-.25cal airgun and a Varmint Permit. When she was alive, the Coyotes would avoid our yard. Since they realized she passed there have been signs of them being in the yard. Wife has been working extremely late, and been afraid to go out at night to smoke because she has flipped on the yard lights and there is a Coyote at the end of the patio growling at her through the glass before jumping up the privacy wall and meandering it's way along. I have gone out at 4am to water in order to avoid the heat and found rabbit carcasses mostly eaten on the side of the house. 

I can't use a firearm, because it is illegal to "set off a firearm in city limits", but even Fish and Game as well as Animal Control has just grinned at me when I ask about a large caliber airgun and ask if I have a Varmint permit.

Those bigger units are super deadly! They rival real firearms in what they can do.

I recently got to shoot a couple of models at an indoor range. Thankfully, I have nice Cinderblock walls that make a decent backstop LOL! (not sure the hollow walls will really stop one of those airgun shots)

Several years ago, my neighbor had a compost pile in his back corner  (right next to my reloading shed).  We had an infestation when the local rat community decided to make his compost pile into a condominium housing project.  Living inside the city limits, shooting them (more than once or twice a week) was pushing it.......weren't friends enough of the other neighbors to know if they minded me killing the little critters.

Anyway, was in the shed one sat morn when I saw one poking his head out of one of the many entrance/exits, took aim with my SA Longslide (loaded with 255gr lswc +P bowling pin ammo) and timed his exit and retreat back into the condo. Nailed him just as he reached the chain link fence and the shoulder shot crushed him into the fence to the extent that he had to be pried out with a pair of pliers.  I couldn't pull him out with my bare hands. It was a glorious hunting expedition. Tracy
