Hello to all. I'm looking to put a red dot, Leupold Deltapoint or something comparable, on a full sized Witness P. It's not drilled & tapped but there is a slot for the rear sight that might be usable except EAA provides no data regarding the size so I've no idea what to look for. Any suggestions appreciated. Dovetail mount optics are crap, generally. It's better than nothing, but it places the optic so far off the bore axis, it's worth nothing more than a testing process. It has NO use in practicality. I use them, but only for platform testing. If you can't drill/tap or mill, holographic (or other elevated) sights should be limited to ONLY competitive platforms, where sighting distances are absolutely predictable.

I've switched to mounting a holographic sight on a P220. Leupold makes a dovetail mount for it but your comment certainly is concerning as the pistol would not be for competition but for everyday carry. Do your comments apply to the Leupold mount as well? It SEEMS to sit fairly low on the barrel. There are no gunsmiths near where I live but I could certainly get the gun to one to drill and tap if that was the best option. Thanks in advance.

PD ammo at bottom is a custom handload using new StarLine nickled cases, WLP primer, and enough HS-6 to drive a Federal HST180* to about 1100FPS.  They work superbly in my testing.

* These are not available to handloaders AFAIK; I pull them from Federal 40S&W ammo.

I used a dove tail mount on my Glock 29 10mm just to see what a red Dot would be like.

I hunted with it and killed two pigs. One was close about 15 yards as I was walking and the other from a tree stand just over 35 yards.
I never had a problem with it, it held zero perfectly even after a bunch of my 10mm reloads.

I liked it well enough to decide to buy a G40 MOS when they came out.

A machined slide to take a red dot is the best option and gives a lower and cleaner install but don't discount a good dovetail mount.

I think it depends on accessories that you're gonna throw on/and purpose of the gun.... With a red dot you have no back up sights, but I think it's a great option, especially for distance (iron sights larger and in field of view at smaller targets).  But I would also want a rail on my frame, as I have on my RIA.  if anything, for a light, or like me, an IR laser.

Now, money aside, go red dot, and dual laser.  Red dot for reg shooting, visible laser for backup, IR for night..... yes, I come from the tacticool world, haha, but I do love my EOTECH 512 dual laser redo combo on my AR.  Actually.... if I was real tacticool I wouldn't have spent the almost grand on that combo, but love the compact size of it.  And I walk around at night with my pvs14 and thermal, to observe nature, everyone's out at night!!  But have IR on my guns as personal protection when out at night, it's not the animals, more so the drunken hillbilly idiots I've run across before, not all, but some
