Let this be a lesson for all.

High velocity LEAD BULLETS for bears.

Always.

I've seen this story somewhere else previously.

Couple observations:
Guide supposed to have had 33 years of experience leading fishermen and clients in the area.
Guide usually carried a S&W 629 44 mag for protection but on this particular occasion chose a S&W 3953 3.5" barrel, 7 round capacity 9mm to protect himself and his clients in Coastal Brown Bear area........Oh but, he used Buffalo Bore 147gr. hard cast ammo.
Bear was within 2' of his clients before he started firing and got 6 shots into it before it went down.

Personal conclusion:
Clients are very LUCKY to be alive IMO!!!  Hope they hurried and bought lottery tickets cause that was luckiest day of their lives.
I don't care if he was Davy Crockett, that was a very stupid risk to take with other people's lives IMO.
Clients would have been wise to have fired him before leaving town.  He was guiding them into Alaskan wilderness not the local Applebee's.
Don't see anything commendable about this man's actions.  Extraordinarily irresponsible closer to the truth.

I honestly don't know what to say, other than I think that the guide was extremely lucky, as were his clients. I know several LEO's who don't trust the 9mm as a reliable man-stopper, let alone a charging grizzly. I can't think of an animal with more tenacity. There's a reason many Alaskan guides/outfitters carry a large caliber rifle, or a shotgun w/slugs, as their primary
OFF SWITCH for bears, and who also carry a big bore revolver, of the 454 Casull,  475 Linebaugh, or 500 S&W variety,
as back up for when their primary gun can't be utilized quickly enough. I'm glad that it turned out well for the guide and his clients, but I bet they all had to change their underwear.

9mm wouldn't be my first choice in that neck of the woods for sure. I think I would like to get a box of these for testing and pull-down. Does anyone know of a more radical/extreme hardcast bullet loaded in 9mm?

Intercooler

I really like the capacity option though, but 220gr 10mm hardcast. I would carry the .44 with 320gr hardcast as my choice.

^ This +1 if I was walking around in Kodiak Bear woods.

I'd also make absolutely certain my guide was similarly strapped.  Even better if he was packing a 12 gauge or 45-70 guild gun (or similar) loaded with slugs or hard cast ammo of course.

I suppose everyone has their take.  Here's mine.

The bear was close enough to bite the client and didn't would lead me to believe it was a bluff charge.  If it wanted to do harm, it would have.  I'd guess that putting rounds into the neck of a bear would increase the danger of the bear attacking.  It is really a good thing it didn't associate the gunshot with the client they were next to.  If it thought it came from them, they would be dead.

22LR can be used in self defense on humans.  It has sufficient penetration and enough rounds can be effective, but isn't ideal.  A 9mm with a big brown bear would be about the same as 22LR in a human.  Better choices available, I'm sure.

Yes, a lucky bunch I'd say.

I felt safe with a 9mm here in California against Black Bear, but that was with a higher capacity (15+) magazine. The new law that takes effect in 2017 makes my magazines over 10 rounds illegal, so I will go with a larger caliber like a light 10mm. I would never use a 9mm against a Grizzly unless it was all I had.

P.S. That bear on the Buffalo Bore website doesn't look very big.

After this has been characterized as "irresponsible" on the part of the guide what else can I add? Frankly I'm shocked at the number of people I've seen so far in other arenas that are praising this so called guide. He's lucky he didn't get his clients killed.

Poor choice in weapon selection.

A decent amount of skill.

A lot of luck.
