We lost a member a couple of days ago. Robocop10mm (Craig Hutchinson) was murdered. Many of you may have seen this on the national news as he was a Sgt. with a Texas Sheriffs Dept. and was set to retire in Sept.

R.I.P. Brother!

I was familiar with this, but didn't know the 10mm connection. Thanks for that.

Here's the release I got Monday:

He looks like someone that could take care of himself.

The police always say to stay in your house and wait for the police to show up, and never go outside to confront the criminals on your own.

Really? He WAS the police. I would have done the same, without a doubt. Read the news release. He wasn't in his house. Had he been dispatched, or happened upon the incident on duty, the result would have been the same. He played it by the book, and lost. It happens. That's the way it sometimes works, sad as it is. I've been in EXACTLY that situation countless times. That's what we do. The ONLY difference is, I'm here to say it. Many of my brothers are not!

I just read three different articles about the incident, including this one:

http://heavy.com/news/2016/07/travis-county-texas-sheriff-sergeant-craig-hutchinson-shot-shooting-killed-dead-round-rock/

I get the impression he was not on duty, and had not been dispatched.  He was either coming off duty, or was returning home from some other evening activity.  He noticed something awry, radioed in and then investigated.

That said, I am sure he followed the correct protocols.  Once he contacted dispatch, his subsequent acts would have been no different than if he had been on duty and sent to investigate a report by another citizen.

Sad news.

Rest in peace officer Hutchinson.  Deepest condolences to his family.

Earnestly hope those responsible are caught and face justice.

It didn't say in the "PoliceOne" report that DM posted above, but I thought he was home (asleep), and was woken up by someone breaking into his shed.

QuoteSgt. Craig Hutchinson of the Travis County Sheriff's Office used his police radio around 1:30 a.m. to report people prowling behind his house. Investigators arriving moments later found Hutchinson lying on the ground in his backyard in Round Rock, about 15 miles from Austin.

Around here, the police won't investigate anything without backup. Especially burglaries, robberies, and domestic disputes.

I have heard it said many times by police that nothing is a routine call. Always be prepared.
