73% favor more gun laws, 10% say no

A closer look at the findings of the Associated Press-GfK poll:

A new poll shows that Americans generally support some of the most often-proposed limits on gun ownership, including universal background checks and banning semi-automatic weapons such as the AR-15.

Yet behind that support are deep divisions based on political party, geography, race and gender. The support for tighter gun laws also has clear limits. Americans broadly oppose a mandatory gun buyback program, do not want to ban handguns and do not believe gun manufacturers should be held liable when their products are later used in a crime.

A closer look at the findings of the Associated Press-GfK poll:

___

WIDE SUPPORT FOR CHANGES

Nearly two-thirds of Americans say they believe the nation's gun laws should be stricter. They are more likely to say Congress should set gun laws rather than state and local governments, which are passing a patchwork of different rules.

Two changes that have been recently blocked in Congress enjoy the broadest support, each with 73 percent in favor and 10 percent opposed. The first would require private sellers doing business at gun shows and over the internet to conduct background checks on buyers. The second would ban individuals who are on the government's terrorism watch list from purchasing guns, even if they have not been convicted of crimes.

Proposals to reinstate a ban on semi-automatic weapons and to ban high-capacity magazines were favored by more than half of respondents and opposed by a quarter of them.

Most favor making adults criminally liable if their guns are accessed by children and are used to harm themselves or someone else. Americans are also more likely to favor than oppose allowing the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to study gun violence.

The support for stricter gun laws appears to be driven, at least in part, by personal safety worries. Roughly 6 in 10 Americans are at least moderately concerned that they or members of their families might be victims of gun violence.

Amendment II

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Marbury v Madison

"A Law repugnant to the Constitution is void."

Go ahead and try to infringe.  More than these two say they CANNOT and you get to face me in front of a jury if you try to infringe.

Courts last month affirmed the NYS SAFE Act passed by both parties.

It banned assault style weapons, and it pissed me off.

Rights will never be taken away, it will just cost more and most likely create a insurance requirement.

Geeman

Look what "void" means in a legal dictionary.

I have a right to ignore a law that doesn't exist.

I'd love to see any gun related poll taken at the dem convention this week. That would carry as much credibility as the ones you post about. Why? Well, most gun people I know lie on any poll that has to do with guns. Those polls are inherently inaccurate and the not worth the paper it's printed on. How about we poll the NRA members or members of gun clubs across America for their views. You can then quote those numbers and they will have the same accuracy as the numbers you consistently spew out on these boards. Save the bandwidth. We are not interested in any poll you tell us about. You have proven to be a shill for Hillary and nothing you post has any credibility. Have fun at your convention this week. Say hi to Hillary for us. I bet Feinstein and Soros will be there as well with Bloomberg sitting in his high chair so he can see over the others.

Wolfie

Less than 10% of gun owners are NRA members. Of those that are NRA members a vast majority want background checks.

The GOP needs to affirm Garland now, after November all bets are off.

larryh1108

Making up stuff now, I see.
Please link us to this NRA poll you speak of.
To be valid, it has to originate from the NRA, not Huffington Post or Bloomberg News.
We have learned that just because you say something doesn't make it true.
Your reputation precedes your words.

Wolfie

Of course larry i am making stuff up just like a Republican.

So sad of the lack of perspective here outside of firearms.

Wolfie

The most recent national poll of NRA members was done in January 2013 by Johns Hopkins University, found that 73.7 percent of the members supported requiring background checks for all gun sales.

Pretty consistent polling.

Geeman

More than 73% of the members on this forum are sick of Dem talking points being regurgitated on this board.

Only a few more months of this drivel to go.

Greg

Geeman you don't think it's smart to know what the other side is doing? I go to Drudge and National Review as much as Huffington Post. Also the NRA can do its own poll to squash this nonsense, why have they not? Hmmmmmmmmm

Geeman

To me, the "other side" is the political elite and others that some how believe they control me.  Either I'm controlled, or I am free.  Both cannot be true.

Tell me, am I controlled (slave) or am I free?

No, I couldn't give a rip what they think.  Have an issue with me, sue me.

Greg

Part of winning is itel and knowing what the attack is going to be. Unless you are off the grid and live off the land you are a slave, the only difference if your a outside slave or a inside one.

BEEMER!

You can get any answer you want on a poll by the way the question is phrased.

ie.

"If violent crimes would be reduced, would you be in favor of requiring background  checks on all gun sales?"

What answer would you get?  Without seeing the actual wording, polls are worthless in my opinion.  The NRA is guilty also I am sure.

Wolfie

Background checks would reduce violent crime. When cops in NYC get killed they trace the guns back to the same SC gun shop who sells the guns, and then the guy who bought the guns sells them to unknown people who then sell them to cop killers.

When the cops trace the guns, the original purchaser says I did nothing wrong.

The NRA can do a poll anytime, they won't as they know it will bode bad for them.
