Need suggestions for 10mm reloading

So I finally joined the 10mm club.  I bought a Gen 2 Glock G21 SF.  I thought that I would never own another Glock again, since I've owned a few years ago and could not stand the grip angle and how they shot.  I decided to give the G21 a chance since I felt that getting a Glock was the easiest way to get into 10mm.  Especially considering buying mags and holsters.

Anyway, I'm not new to reloading, but this is my first 10mm, so I wanted to get some advice.  I did research some, but I haven't found the info that I"m looking for, so the reason for my new thread.

I picked up 4lbs of Long Shot today...based on what I've read on here, it seemed to be decent powder to start with and that's what my friend uses for his 10mm reloading.  The LGS also had Power Pistol which I also heard was good.  I went with Long Shot.

Anyway, I read that most are using CCI or Winchester large pistol primers.  I have Federal large pistol primers and I haven't seen anyone using these for 10mm loads.  Do I need to know anything about using the Federal primers?  I just didn't want to buy the CCI since I have 2k of the Federals.  Once I use them up, I'll probably go with the CCI primers.

I am a prepper and I would like to buy in bulk for bullets.  I'd like to get a bullet that won't put me in the poor house buy buying in bulk.  I have XTPs for my 45 and I'm thinking that this bullet would be a good choice.  I am open to other bullets, so let me know what you would recommend.  I am looking for a cost effective bullet that I can buy in bulk to stash for a rainy day.

Would the xtreme HP bullets be a decent inexpensive option?

I do not plan to cast bullets, but there is a local gun shop that produces their own cast bullets.  They are offering a coated bullet that I may buy in bulk for target practice.

For carry, I plan on using Underwood as everyone seems to recommend them.

I wouldn't be concerned about the brand of the primer (as long as it's standard when standard is called for), just work up from the starting charge.

Bullets in bulk? Look at RMR.

munchie3409, Hello and welcome to the forum.  The Federal large Pistol primers will be just fine, most don't like the large box they come in...but they are good to go!  LongShot is a good powder for its potential yield at the upper end of performance.

Did you get yourself a 10mm barrel for the G-21 and some G-20 10mm magazines?  Some do use the 10mm extractor as part of the conversion.  You might want a stronger recoil system for the 10mm use as well.

Best regards,  ;)

You can look at Montana Gold as an online source for JHP i GET 180G JHPS and I have never had a problem with them also they like to sell in bulk as the prices get better at 500 or 1000 or more.vz 100. Enjoy.  Craig

I think that that Lee advises against using Fed primers in their progressives (not sure if that is relevant relevant you). Otherwise should be absolutely fine in a 10mm case.

I got a Storm Lake barrel as I didn't want to get an OEM Glock barrel.  I've never liked how Glocks shot, so I figured an aftermarket barrel will shoot better.

I'm waiting on CDNN for my G20 mags...I ordered 15 mags...I am hoping that ETS makes some  hi capacity 10mm mags down the road.

I'm not sure if I am going to swap out to a 10mm extractor.  If I have issues, I'll swap the extractor.

I am pretty fortunate that Wolff Springs is a semi local company for me...I was looking to getting a 22lb spring as I've read that's what most recommend for hot 10mm ammo.

I will have to take a look at Montana Gold...I normally shoot cast bullets from local companies.  Those coated cast bullets seem reasonable in price.

I really want to find some bullets that perform well.  I'll probably end up loading up on XTPs or Gold Dots for SHTF...and go with coated cast bullets for practice.

Only Lee press I have is for my 50BMG...my other presses is a Hornady LNL AP and RCBS Rock Chucker.

You likely will have an issue, sooner or later, if it's the original Gen 2 extractor. The Gen 3 LCI and Gen 4 are fine. The issue is the extractor travel. The LCI extractors have a deeper travel, and with 10mm case heads, just set deeper. The LCI button remains flush with the slide, vs. protruding with .45. If you update the extractor, you'll need the LCI bearing-button as well (goes on the extractor spring, increases the extractor tension and travel).

I agree with the others regarding the Federal primers. They are fine. The reason Lee recommends to not use them is they are more prone to unexpected detonation during handling (which is absolutely true, in my experience). The Lee primer feeding design with their auto-primers places the primer closer to the feed channel during engagement, presenting a chance of chain reaction detonation. Federal primer packaging is a fairly obvious indicator that Federal, at least, suspects their primers to be more delicate than others. The only primers that have detonated on me were Federal. More than a few times, once in the RCBS hand priming tool. I like Federal primers just fine. I just don't use them in auto-primers. Many competitive shooters prefer Federal primers, claiming they are more effective with lighter hammer/pin weights. I believe this to be true, and is probably a good topic for another discussion.

The 22# spring for your G21 slide with warm 10mm ammo is a good choice. It works well in mine. It's similar to my G20 with a 20# spring, feel and ejection distance. The OEM Glock 20 and 21 RSA's are the same, the difference being the slide mass (G20 is heavier).

I shoot a G 20SF as well as a Kimber Stainless Target in 10mm.  The Kimber shoots everything right out of the box. The Glock needed a stainless RSA with a 20# spring. I have been loading 7.9 grains of Power Pistol for 180 grn Xtreme plated bullets. I tried the same load for a lot of 180 grain XTP bullets I bought from the Sierra bullet outlet. They are a bit wimpy, but still cycled the gun.  I really enjoy loading for the 10mm.
