I am on the other end.  Nosler 200 grain at 1200 fps.  The 135's don't achieve minimum 12" penetration.

I'm 9 inches front to back and I'm a pretty big guy. I'm happy with a full 750 foot lbs transfer at +  or - 11 inches, although every 3rd round in my mags are the 115 grain Underwood/Lehigh penetrators..

It is a 15 minute walk from my front porch to rocky mountain bear country.  In fact, DNR commonly has bear issues 10 miles into the city the other way.

Would you feel good about 11" of penetration if you thought you were about equally likely on a given day to need to defend against a bear?

Captain_Witness

No, would carry a few mags of 200 grain hardcast.. BUT having said that, even out there, bipedal bad actors are likely more of a threat than bears, and if I were truly concerned about bears I would most certainly pack a 12 GA stoked with slugs, or my SIG 556R/HK91

Yeah.  That will conceal well at my office.

You got bears at your office? Are you a cop?  ;D

This is the thing folks that don't live out here just don't get.  My office is 10 minutes from downtown SLC, 5 minutes from my house and 300 yards from a national forest. I see mule deer on the street my house is on at least once each year.  I sit in my chair and watch the elk graze the side of the mountain.

Do I expect to see a bear in the parking lot?  No more than I expect to be mugged down there, but given my proximity to bear country, it is an eventuality I need to consider.

To be honest, after all the reading, I found there to be not a huge difference and my LGS had the Nosler's in stock, and quite a bit cheaper than the out of stock XTP's.  If both were there for about the same price, I would probably go with the XTP.

I was raised in rural Northern California and now have rural land on the Olympic Peninsula, WA State where we are about to build our dream retreat home. I was out there last week supervising some heavy equipment work, and I carried a KAHR 45 in my Carhartts, and a SIG 556R (7.62 x 39 with the best loads available, such as SST) slung over my back. I mostly carried the rifle for bipedal miscreants, as bears (unless old, sick and starving) try to avoid man. I've been in many remote forests and seen and heard black bears, but none have ever attacked me. Alternately men have attempted to do so many times. I guess it's all about percentages for me

(Non-handgun) I think the  ultimate bear gun is a SBR in 458 SOCOM loaded with Lehigh defense penetrator. 10 round mag 2-point tactical sling. I also think this would be a very good weapon for law enforcment in remote areas.

Honestly I really like my 10 MM but hardcast are great bullets for penetration but Hawk 200 grain SP with a .035" Jacket is hard to beat.

That said if I was depending on handgun vs bear I would carry my 44 mag with 275 Grain Jacketed sp or the Partition loaded hot.

How about Nosler returning the original 170 grain JHP bullet to the .40 caliber lineup. (It worked in 1984, why not now)? We could launch it from a 5" barrel at 1350-1400 fps for the original Norma velocities. At 1400 fps, the muzzle velocity of the 170 grain slug generates 741 fpe. (Strangely enough that's the energy the .44 Remington Magnum generates from the S&W Model 29)!

I believe the original Norma Amotfors of Sweden load for the 10mm were the best. When you can drop a good size hog with a 200 grain slug cranking out of a 5" pistol barrel at 1200+ fps,  i can't see a real "shortcoming" of the original Norma fodder. Agreed?

The Marlin 1894 Lever, 10mm mod would be nice, but I'd have to add-in a 10mm Ruger Blackhawk too
A Ruger Ranch Rifle in 10mm to go with a nice 10mm Redhawk would be fun
And a 10mm M1 Carbine mod to pair-up to my Delta Gold Cup or Witness
Even though I hate the Glock Pistol, I might have to get a Gen 2 (or 3) G20, Longslide (don't like the Sight System of the G40) to run with my MG (MechTech / Glock) 20 Carbine
I really love a nice Rifle / Pistol Combo   8)
So tell me again how Trump was worse then the 8 years before .... AND what came after HIM !
