Here's a target from the previous week, same load as above for the Bayou 180gr RNFP coated projectiles.

Altho I wanted one of the brown colors, DR Guns in OK City had only black in stock.  Have 2 Glock 15rd. mags (from a Glock 20.4, now sold) and currently only mild to mediumish reloads using 180g. Montana Gold HPs...

...loaded to 1.25" OAL on hand to shoot this coming week.

I know virtually nothing about UBRs*, but this ASc appears to use the same kind of high-mounted optical sights that AR-15s/M-16s/CAR-4s use; is that correct?  If so, then a high-mounted reddot sight like this...

...is what I need?  I do not plan to use this carbine beyond 50 yards, so I think something like a 1x-5x scope would be of little benefit.  Also, these sights need picatinny rails and not Weaver mounts?

Sorry to appear so unknowledgeable, but none of us was born with this knowledge.   :-[

* Ugly Black Rifle, my not-unaffectionate term for these kinds of shoulderarms.

I tried a low mount red dot but could not get a comfortable cheek weld on the stock.  Beyond that it is personal preference. Since the ASR is lightweight I choose to keep it that way and went with one of the small form factor red dots.

Target at 25yds, all OAL's are 1.25"

#1 Upper Left - Bayou Coated RNFP 180 Gr projectile over 12.3gr AA#9 - Avg'd 1485 fps
#2 Upper Right - Pulled 165gr FMJ over 13.2gr AA#9 -  - Avg'd 1495 fps
#3 Lower Left - Berry's 165gr HBFN over 9.0gr Longshot - Avg'd 1365fps
#4 Lower Right - 180gr Montana Lead RN over 8.8gr Longshot - Did not chrono
#5 Middle - Pulled RNFP 180gr FMJ over 8.3gr BE-86 - Avg'd 1413 fps

Not my best shooting but I got some data after struggling with the Labradar chrono. It would appear my carbine likes the 165gr projectiles.  The lead 180gr rn projectiles were terrible both from the ASR and the pistol I was shooting. The center 180gr FMJ's were not bad. The "pulled" FMJ's I picked up from American Reloading for about 4cents/ea shipped in a mixed batch sale they ran a while back.  They all have slight pull marks on the cones but appear to be plenty accurate.

I worked up loads for the pistol barrel using 165gr XTPs and 180gr XTPs. None of these loads produced groups under 10" or so. When I worked up loads using 200 gr bullets (XTPs and Precision Delta FMJ) my groups shrank to about 6" at 100 yards.

I  tried the loads that grouped the best with my pistol barrel (200gr XTP  8.0gr Longshot   Starline brass   CCI Lg primer  1.260" OAL and 200gr Prec. Delta FMJs at 1.230" OAL and 1.260 OAL). Several 5 round groups, of each, were all approximately 6" at 100 yards.

When I initially tried this load with the carbine barrel, I got about an 8" group. But repeat tests with this load, I got a groups of about 12".

I worked up loads with  Precision Delta 200gr FMJ and Longshot. None of the groups were smaller than 12" at 100 yards.

All of my loads were shot off a bench with a rest in front, bags in rear, and a 4.5X scope on the firearm.

Based on the results you got with your carbine, it looks like my results are typical. I was really hoping the carbine would group as well as the pistol. Maybe someone else will find a good grouping combination.

Not sure if I would give up yet.  Two things - I have never heard of Longshot being considered an accurate powder.  From everything I have read it has a sweet spot but finding that sweet spot can take some time.  The second thing would be projectile choice.  I don't see hollow points as being ideal for long range accuracy. I would think something with a slender tip would give better results but I am really not seeing anything in that style profile in .40 size.  It's too bad Hornady doesn't make an FTX in 40.  The injection molded plastic tip was a step forward for rifle projectiles.  I see they do make a .45 FTX projectile so comparing that to some RN ball projectiles would be a good test. I have some .45 XTP's I use for my 460 Rowland along with some standard FMJ's. I'll have to see if I can find some FTX's locally.
