I agree, these are not nuclear loads but they clock 1206fps average for 10 shots. I figured this was enough horsepower for the small Missouri whitetail I took with it.

Congratulations on the harvest and the effectiveness of your

It should be noted that Taffin's load from 1991 is 25 years old and is over max by 8% according to current load data.  The max load of 12.0 grains is reported by the manufacturer to produce 37,500 PSI and 1304 fps, although barrel length is not reported.

Cartridge overall length is 1.250" for the cataloged load.  Increasing that to 1.260" should reduce pressure by about 850 psi, and create a bit of headroom for some additional velocity, but I doubt it would safely accommodate an extra grain of powder.

The newer load should produce about 1355 from my 7" Javalina. While it may not be as warm as John's "original" load, it should still perform reasonably well on medium-sized game.

YUP sure is!  ;D ;D

Congratulations on the deer you done good!!

Concerning your load, if your experienced and responsible, you know how to work up a load that is safe in your gun. Loading manuals are a GUIDE NOT GOSPEL. If your NOT experienced and dont know what to look for, dont tread here, start where the "book" says and stop before the top of the book recommended loadings. I recommend as a reloader, to take the time to read and learn the pressure signs and get the fullest and safest loadings from YOUR GUN.  This is the key, YOUR GUN. Thats because ALL are different and MANY factors raise and lower pressures all unknown to the posters reading this post.

Be safe and load to your comfort level.

"Trophy" is what it is in the eye of the hunter. Any animal taken with a handgun is a trophy for me. I congratulate you in the killing of your trophy handgun animal. Maybe you could fill us inn with more details about distance of the shot, the deers reaction, shot placement and how far the deer traveled after being shot. Enjoy your venison!

To me that's about the perfect velocity for the 180gr.   I don't see a need in ever really exceeding 1200-1250 fps with 180gr (also 200gr) because even at those speeds the tougher bullets like the 180gr XTP and Gold Dot are already being pushed to their performance limit.  I've tested both and at 1200 fps the XTP was already shedding bullet weight well enough that to push it faster would only mean more weight loss and in turn, less penetration.  Congrats on the deer.
