This is the first that I've heard of this and that'd be nice (I'm selling a decent bit of my collection and the tax stamp turns off a lot of people who aren't used to them.) One thing to SQLBullet, no SSN, but rather a D/L number or something similar. Maybe a minimum amount of info to ID, then a D/L or ID picture pops up on their site to confirm? I would never give up my SSN to a stranger on the street.

Probably the system would work differently than I have described for security reasons.

Probably the buyer would login to a website and validate their identity.  Once the buyer completes that, they would be issued a "token", basically a unique string of letters and numbers.  These would be given to the seller, who would go the website and enter them.  When entered, they would get a message with the person's name, DOB and a message indicating they were "approved".

That is just one way to accomplish this.  There are others.

The tax and the convoluted process is to discourage use, not as a big revenue stream (the numbers just aren't there).

The revenue stream was there, 80 years ago. One stamp was equivalent to about the average monthly wage, of the time. If modernized, it would surely be a substantial revenue stream.

Then, as now, these laws, processes and expenses only affect those who obey the law. Then, as now, criminals continued, business as usual. It only serves to promote a deeper black market. Even in CA, NY, NJ, or other similarly unConstitutional states, all of the locally and federally prohibited/controlled weapons and accessories are readily available, with no paperwork, and no waiting period. What law would change that?
