An undercharged round resulting in a squib load will be horrific if it happens during a gunfight or any other time you need your gun to function in a life or death situation.

Undercharge sounds way better than overcharge, at least at the range. In the field, I'd want neither, but would still opt for the undercharge and a follow up after racking the slide (if even needed) and firing again at the critter.

That is why I will use my own handloads for defense, and will load them one-at-a-time on a single stage press.

I would venture to say that neither an over-charged or under-charged round is good for one's confidence or safety.

However, with the under-charged round that I had, the only 'issue' I had was one of astonishment!  The real problem could have been if I really needed the round in self defense. Then, it would have been an 'oh, sh*t" moment. Had it been an over-charged situation, there could have been significant physical damage with the Gold Dot 165gr JHP round.

For an update, I shot three boxes, sixty rounds of the new batch of Underwood GD 165gr JHP nickel plated, and there were no problems.

A significant undercharge can be bad news.  If it doesn't get the bullet out of the barrel, and you don't check for an obstruction, the next shot will be very exciting.
