Attempting to debate or even discuss much of anything with a Liber-Tard is like pissing into the wind. I'm pretty much done trying to talk to friends or family that are of the "i'm as dumb as a bag of hair" Lib variety, you're better served talking to your dog or cat~ the dog or cat has more to contribute to the discussion anyway.

I do debate with them.

First I attack (nicely) the false assumption that government can prevent someone from harming you.  They can't!!!  Ask them "How long would it be for a cop to walk through that door if you dialed 911?", then set an egg timer.  Then ask "What is your plan if a drug crazed criminal walks through that door right now?"  Most have no idea.  Eventually the egg timer goes off.  How much could a criminal do in that much time?  The government agencies cannot get there in time.  They don't want to think about that, but its really hard to argue that they could really help in time, even for an ultra-lib.

Next would be the simple concept that the stronger person wins, no matter what.  If an person with a MMA background walked through my door, I wouldn't be able to do much to stop him.  If I was a smaller female, that would extend to nearly the whole population that could overpower and have their way.  They might have a knife.  They might have a club.  They might strangle, batter, kidnap, kill, rape...  Nothing could be done to stop them.  Is that the world they seek?  Is it???   Firearms are a great equalizer.  It gives the smallest lady equal footing with the biggest, baddest bad man.  Which way is better...?

Then would come the "But if there were no guns..." argument.  That is a fallacy too, and that needs to be addressed.  Bad guys would have them.  That would just ensure that they would meet little resistance while doing evil deeds.  Good guys loose...

Then its time to take them to the range.  On the way there discuss what if one person in the Colorado theater had been armed.  What about if one teacher or administrator in the school shootings could respond in a timely manner?  What if some trained individuals carried rather than a totally "gun free zone".  I know if I were there in an active shooter situation, I'd want a good guy with a gun to be able to confront a bad guy with a gun.

A discussion about gun safety before a session might start to break down the "evil gun" thoughts.  Getting a few rounds down range will usually be fun for them. 

And the foundation of their anti-gun stance will be a little bit weaker.

The statistic was AVERAGE # of guns per "resident".  Not sure exactly what "resident" implies ... probably doesn't include kids, I'd suspect.  Many people who own  a gun own many more than one gun.  And the average number of guns per Republican could be quite a bit different than the average per Democrat (or conservative vs liberal).

But it IS true that there are a lot of gun owners who aren't members of the NRA ... irresponsible of them, in my opinion.  And there are a lot of gun owners who vote for politicians who would prefer that ordinary people not be allowed to have guns ... also irresponsible, in my opinion.

I am a Democrat and I own many guns most 1911's in all calibers.

I quit the NRA when they called me bootjacked thug. I then joined the NYS affiliate and wrote many letters to them telling them not to trust the GOP. Of course they did not listen and the GOP facilitated the NYS SAFE Act.

The NRA has become a agent of the GOP, it will doom them in the future.

After all besides guns, when have Republicans ever stopped liberals?

Exactly! That's the point of this post, Shadow. Another gun-free zone cost more innocent Americans, this time 4 Marines, their lives. When in the hell are these politicians, especially the current administration, going to wake up and realize that CRIMINALS DO NOT OBEY THE LAW, especially where guns are concerned, that's why they're called criminals. Gun control, in it's many forms, doesn't do a damn thing to prevent crime. If it did, then Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and other cities like them, with very strict firearms laws, would be some of the safest cities in the world. Instead, the only people affected by these laws are law abiding citizens, who lose their ability to protect themselves with each restriction that's passed.

Too bad it always comes down to this.

First, it is necessary to sell what you believe in.  To just call names and burn bridges just guarantees that it will be worse down the road.  Respect is a necessary starting point to dialog.  I'm not saying you have to give an inch, but you should at least have a measure of empathy and see if you can understand where the other guy comes from.

Second, some are bought and paid for.  Their belief is nothing more than voting in their own self interest.  I believe that is the case here. 

Third, establishment politics are the problem here.  I don't care which party, both have effectively built machines that are geared to keep outsiders out, and more government is of benefit to both sides.

How long have the Republicans held both houses of congress, and how many vetos have they forced Obama to sign.  The Republicans are just as bad as the Dems, and the Dems are really bad.
