I am with you on self-stuffers.  I was watching Jurassic World and lusting once again after a 1895 Guide Gun in 45-70, when it dawned on me how much better equipped you would be with an AR-10 in 45 Raptor.  Better ballistics, 20 rounds on tap and much faster reloads.  Not to mention the endless world of accessories.

I love the look of a lever gun.  But I don't see me buying one.

While I see your point to a certain degree; respectfully point out a guy with a modern 45-70 lever action and the proper ammunition wouldn't be undergunned ANYWHERE on the planet....  The big 5 in Africa, countless brown (including the Alaskan coastal bears) & black bears, American Bison, etc. have been harvested cleanly with it.  For up close protection (inside 100 yards) in the bush, I wouldn't trade my 45-70 Marlin 1895 sbl for any other bang stick I can think about.

I will agree with that if you add the word "hunting" before anywhere.  The guide gun is an excellent gun, and one that certainly engenders some lust on my part.

I still stand by my statement.  You are better equipped with an AR-10 in 45 Raptor.  Better ballistics, better reload speed, and when the AR-10 is well-made, just as reliable.

We each have the right to go our own way and I respect yours.

For me:
Cartridge with 140 years of proven success; from taming the Wild West (manifest destiny heritage),  used successfuly as war fighting implement, harvesting the badest creatures walking the planet (in every climate).
-vs-
New (2 or 3 year) cartridge in a substantially heavier platform (even before the ammunition is considered).

While I'm pretty solidly intrenched; I'll keep an eye on your AR-10 45 Raptor in the years to come to see how it fares the test of time. 

PS....
I have great affinity for my AR-10 & M1a both in 308 cal.  From deer to 450lbs ferral hogs neither has ever let me down.

We are all here because we don't really see an agreement in pedigree versus quantitative utility.  If we we were about pedigree, we would be ignoring the 10mm and arguing about 9mm vs 40 S&W vs 45 ACP.

I too am anxious to build out a Raptor and see what she will do.

Yea I'm liking the cartridge I'm loading for my nephew the 458 SOCOM from the AR platform...BTW there is talk that SAAMI may legitimize the cartridge soon!   These are the 45-70 equivalent but can be run on the AR15 with the 458SOCOM upper.

The 45 Raptor is the 308 based big brother to the 458 socom.  The Raptor requires an AR-10/AR308 base gun.  It will push a 250 grain projectile another 650 fps faster than the 458 socom.  Or, you can keep the same muzzle velocity with an extra 100 grains in tow.

I would love to see someone come out with a big, long, high BC bullet in the 400-450 grain range that could be loaded subsonic in the Raptor.  Kind of 45 blackout.

I think I might be able to get one down pretty close to the 7lbs challenge.  My build will use a TN Arms lower, which is about half the weight of a aluminum lower.  Add in lightweight other furniture and I think I can hit about 7.5 lbs with a scout scope.

I will post up pics and specs once my lowers get in in a few weeks.
