Gents,

been kinda waiting on the Glock 42 come out now and was thinking about going ahead and buying one and getting my name on the list at our local le dealer.but I was thinking what advantages would the 40 have over the 20? After all if we are planning on shooting lead reloads are we not going to have to put a replacement barrel in anyways? What advantages would the 40 have over the 20, maybe the mos system? But if one does not plan on putting hunting sights on it, is it worth it? I gotta gets me one soon, lol....

I run a lot of lead through my Glock with no issue.

IMHO the problems with Glocks and lead are that guys don't follow the rules:  Slug your bore and used cast bullets at least .001" over groove diameter.

My Glock 29 factory barrel slugged just a hare over .401".  That means commercial cast bullets sized .401", that are too hard and have poor lube, are definitely going to lead the barrel like crazy.

My own cast bullets unsized measure about .403", are from moderate hardness lead (BHN 12-13) and are lubed with a messy but effective medium soft lube run just fine in my G29.

All that said, the G40 strikes me as a hunting or target gun.  Set up for optics from the factory, too long and heavy for comfortable carry, even in a duty holster.  The extra slide mass will certainly help on nuclear loads though.

The 40 is going to have even less market than the 20, but it'd be interesting to see if the Gen4 G40 will or will not have the FTF issues the Gen4 G20 has.  I wonder, as crazy as it seems, if putting some weights on the Gen4 G20 slide would help FTF issues for those that have them.

As Sqbullet said, G40 for hunting, silhouette shooting, or maybe as a dedicated target gun.

G20 for carry / home defense / range gun.

I am sure it won't.  And if we had the MOS system on the Gen4 G20 you could make a mint selling platinum MOS covers that would add mass to the slide.

Glad i read this as I am try to read bout everything in this website about the g20....didn't know it had ftf issues....wow...stock? Kinda sucks as these were thReae two I was looking too next

Some of the Gen4's have FTF issues with the very, very hottest loads from Underwood.

No reason to shy away from the G20.  You will find plenty of very, very stout loads that run great

I run a 24 pound RSA in mine for the Underwood etc. and it runs great.

Others haven't been so lucky, but I think the problems exist with the earlier Gen 4 guns.

Pumpkinheaver

To try to ease your mind a little I have had zero reliability issues from my Gen 4 20.

Some Gen4 G20 have FTF issues not just with Underwood but with stout 10mm power ammo.  The issue is not so much the FTF but the fact that Glock's 'fix" is to play dumb on issue, returning a FTF as 'no problems found', unless pressed, then their "fix" is to give a Gen3.  Only one person so far that I know of has fixed their Gen4 G20 FTF issue, by using a higher pound recoil spring.  Others have tried that and it didn't work, so your mileage my vary on trying to fix a misbehaving Gen4 G20.

I for one hope there are a lot of G40's sold and we get some users reporting here with higher power ammo.  I'm interested myself in seeing if the heavier slide helps or not.  Time will tell...

Isn't the main difference in slides for Glocks in different calibers the weight of the slide? If acceleration is equal to Force/Mass, it would seem increasing the weight of the slide would slow it's speed in recoil. Occasionally I've thought of putting lead tape on a slide to see if it made any difference.....but, I'm lazy. ;)

OP, you shouldn't have any issues with either when it comes to functionality. As sqlbullet stated, follow his suggestions on shooting lead.

I think the main problem is that most people don't clean their guns - especially the bore. Many people think that a pistol doesn't need to be clean, or worse, they think that cleaning it will cause more problems than not cleaning it.

The rumors I've heard, and they are rumors, so take them what they are worth, the G40s should be shipping later this late spring, early summer.
