Has anyone taken one of the new RI 40 S&W double stacks and converted it to 10mm?  Seems like an interesting upgrade.

I did this to a P16-40.  Worked great.  Doesn't like certain bullet profiles seated longer than 1.250".  It is my every day fun.  Have it on right now in fact.

Should be an easy cheap 10mm conversion.  Just ream it .

Would like to be able to have both calibers so I can use 40 for practice.

It is  more money that way, but still only the price of a barrel and fitting.

Do the .40 mags work with 10mm or do you need different mags?

In the Para the same mags work fine.  I like the Mec-Gar mag in the gun for carry as it is a flush fit, but I like the Triple K mags for backup mags as they actually hold 17 rounds.  Mec-Gar  and two triple K's plus one in the pipe gives me an even 50 rounds of 180 grain 10mm JHP.

The 40 mags that come with the gun will allow 10mm.  I contacted RIA about having a 40 fitted with a 10mm barrel.  Their response was to buy the gun then send it to the factory where they will fit a 10mm barrel to it.  Sorry, but I don't think I will send it to the factory for a month when I could fit the barrel myself in a day.
Supposedly the Mecgar P16/40 mags are what the gun comes from the factory with.

It sounds like If I just wanted to convert the gun from .40 to 10mm all you would need is to ream the chamber to 10mm and maybe add a heavier recoil spring. Would anything else need to be done?

Now that's what I call self defense :)  I might need to build me one of those !

Yes, that is absolutely doable.  However, I have one of my progressives set up with bullet and case feeder to shuck out 40's by the bucket.  I also have two 55 gallon drums of 40 brass.  I want to use 40 for practice and 10 for defense.

You will get lots of opinions on this.  Ream and it will go bang.  You will then have to test for reliability.

When I converted mine, in addition to reaming I made other changes.  These were to address longevity.

I replaced the recoil spring with a wolff spring, a 24# I believe.  I also replaced the mainspring.  I think it was 25#.  And, I replaced the firing pin stop with an EGW oversized and left it flat bottomed.  I have since gone back to the 18.5# recoil spring after better educating myself.

So, did you leave the mainspring at 25#? That's what I did on my Eclipse but my RIA runs better with a slightly higher recoil spring of 20# and 25# main. Steve

That's a definite given.  I was gonna go with a springco recoil reducer and a 22# to start and go down from there after I get the load right.
