Range Report: Glock 20 Gen 4

Well, I got the Gen 4 to the range on Sunday for a long awaited trial and first impressions.

The grip polygons: They might make a difference with wet hands. With normal, dry, room temperature hands I didn't notice much of a difference. Also, with my Goretex gloves I did not notice any difference. With rubber coated gloves...yes. The polygons seemed to grip the rubber texture better.

Trigger: Feels a little heavier than my Gen 3 20 SF trigger. I put a little Remoil where the connector contacts the trigger bar a day earlier before I shot the gun and let it sit. By the end of the shooting session I think the trigger pretty much broke in (200 rounds).

Shooting Experience: I noticed the dual recoil spring assembly right away, which had a different "feel" than my Gen 3 RSA. Firing 50 rounds of Remington UMC ammo the dual spring really seemed to soak up some recoil.

On to Underwood 165 grain (1400 fps). The gun fired well until I had a failure to feed with this ammo and the stock spring. Now, I have never had a FTF with this ammo in my Gen 3.

So...the next box of Underwood ammo I tried the 24 pound RSA meant for the Gen 4 I ordered from Glockmeister. The Underwood fed flawlessly with this spring for the entire 50 round box.

The next box of ammo I fired was the Remmy UMC which I wanted to try with the 24 pound spring. It worked fine for the 50.

Recoil: Recoil in this gun was medium with the UMC ammo. The Underwood was stout. I didn't notice much of a difference in recoil between the stock dual RSA and the 24 pound single spring captured guide rod assembly. The recoil is more of a "straight back" recoil, and is not snappy in terms of muzzle rise. The 24 pound RSA most definately worked better with both levels of ammo.

My Opinion: The Glock Gen 4 10mm model 20 is a tough, durable, and reliable handgun. It is also accurate. In all honesty, I was hoping Glock would have designed the new dual RSA for the heavy type 10mm ammo. I have to say after my first experience at the range this is not the case. The gun works better with the most powerful 10mm ammo utilizing an aftermarket 24 pound RSA, same as the Gen 3.

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed shooting this gun. I will keep the stock RSA for medium power ammo, and use the 24 pound aftermarket for the hot stuff.

And when people at the range come up behind you to see what you are shooting, you know you are making an impression.

As one of those that has a Gen G20 that has FTF with real power and top power 10mm ammo, would be interested to hear how many FTF you have with the Underwood that functioned flawlessly in your Gen3.

Though I wouldn't have a Gen4 - I'm glad that someone is having good luck with one. I'll stay with my 3 Gen3's = until they come out with a 10MM long slide - then we'll see.

Glad it has done well. I knew they were coming out with some aftermarket springs for the G4...haven't had a chance to research much. But I after really been looking....my G4 has been flawless.....even with mixed ammo from target to different weight hot loads.

Although it doesn't hurt to have an extra RSA on hand.

Anytime! It certainly seems like Glock has knocked the kinks out of the Gen 4.

I haven't had any problems with my G20 Gen4.  I've shot lots of different stuff from weak Freedom Munitions stuff thru Underwood 180 grain, 200 grain, and the hot 220 grain HCL.  The first time I shot the gun I put almost 100 rounds from 5 different boxes of ammo thru the gun.  The slide locked open with one Buffalo Bore 200 grain round still left in the mag.  That's the only malfunction.  I have 400 rounds thru it and the stock RSA works fine.

I got this for a woods gun, so I have not even put any of the lighter faster HP's thru it.  My carry ammo is either the Underwood 180 Grain TMJ or the Underwood 220 grain HCL.

It might have been an anomaly with the 1 ftf and the stock spring. Still, in my mind I feel more comfortable now with the 24 pound spring in the gun.

Keep on shooting and you can see if that's a one time deal or something that comes back from time to time. I ended up buying a Gen 4 stock RSA for my G29 sf. The 4 year old RSA had failed a few times with UW. I also tried a Glock store 23 lb rsa and it randomly locks my slide back. So far so good with the new gen 4 rsa.

Hi all! Just found this place today. I picked up a NIB Gen 4 Glock 20 today. I have a Gen 3 as well and a Gen 3 29.
Looks like I might need to order a 24 lb spring just to have.

Congrats on the G20!

The 24 pound spring has served me well with both Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glocks in 10mm.
