How many defensive rounds do you keep in inventory?

I think I have 300 in 10mm and around 700 in 9mm and 200 in .45(I don't even own one)

Patriot

I have 200 made of 10mm with the capability to make a thousand more.

They are all defensive to a point.  But 9mm carry ammo HST or bonded golden sabers maybe 300rds, need more!! I cycle about 3-10rds from my carry gun every time at the range. In 10mm maybe 200xtp 180gr hornady, 200 doubletap 200gr, 100 underwood 200gr xtp, 100  trophy bonded 180gr federal, some random 45acp ranger t and hst 230gr for my glock 30.

The better question would be "How many are too many?  Don't pay me no mind, I always was a "what if" kind of guy... ::)

I posted this in another section of the forum...as an answer to this question;
Quotewhat would be the minimum amount of ammo you suggest to have stocked?

That would depend on how much you intend to shoot.  How many years you intend to shoot?
What needs do you have general plinking, competition, hunting or even a war...(should it come to that) :o
The chamber you shoot the ammo from, loose chambers allow the cases to expand more.
How hot the rounds are, Hotter rounds can shorten case life.
Many cases get lost or split with work hardening of the sizing process of multi uses.
What about projectiles?  Jacketed stuff is always more expensive than plated or cast bullets.
What if the 40cal bullets get harder to find with many LEO's changing to 9mm?  Less contracts or demand can lead to less overall production of products.
What if in the future they stop making 10mm ammo or casings?  I hope not, but who knows what the future holds.

So with all these things to consider what do you consider too much!  1K? 2K? 5K? 10K? More?

With all that in mind and me being me, I am probably over stocked!  :o

Not enough...
I use Silvertips as my normal def carry.  With normal replacement re cycling of rounds when taking out carry rounds to go shooting AND the lack of finding Stips out there, I'm running out.  ( after about 3-5x thru gun, they go into the shoot pile )

I guess I'll have to find some gold dot heads and load my own def carry rounds

Interesting question, I would say reloads several K+ each shooting caliber, cases 15K+store bought, store bought defensive ( i just buy from timt to time)  3k+. What happens to me is I like reloding and I end up making mor than I shoot.

Load all the mags!

That is my general standard.  If I have a magazine for a handgun, it is kept topped off with defense ammo.

So...three 17 round mags for the P16 and one 15 round mag, six 15 round mags for the Witness's, two 10 round Glock mags and two 15 round Glock mags as well as the +1 for each of the guns.

so...Carry the 1, add 4, looks like I keep 210 rounds ready to roll.  And I generally have a box or two of spare, so call it 300 rounds minimum.

10mm: Actual hand loaded rounds using Gold Dots is 100.

I still have a mag and a half of Hornady Critical defense I purchased because I didn't trust the Rainiers for personal defense.

I have 400 rounds of Rainiers for practice.

.40s&w: Still have about 200 rounds of factory ammo because I switched during the panic and didn't have any powders available to reload at the time. Planning to tear down for the components. I already have a buyer for the primed brass.

.308: About 200 rounds of practice ammo. 75 rounds of Hunting ammo divided up between 125gr, 150gr, 180gr

6.5-284: Nothing loaded at this time, but I have enough to load 100 rounds. Since this is my entry level F-Class rifle, and brass is expensive, I am only loading up what I intend to use that day. I am also waiting on a Chronograph. I have loaded and fired enough to date to break one scope, break one scope mount, break in the barrel per Manufacturer Suggested procedures.

.222 Rem: 200 rounds of useless factory ammo, until I can figure out how to get the shoulders to shift forward to properly fit the T/C barrel. 25 rounds of .223 resized to properly headspace in the T/C chamber

.357 Herrett: 50 rounds of test loads. Still dialing in my load data.

.45LC: 75 rounds of factory ammo. I don't shoot this much as it is for a .45/410 barrel combo that is "okay" with .410, but is horrible with .45LC. Looking for a .45LC solo barrel for my T/C

.45ACP: 24 round box of Magtech Golden Guardian +P ammo...the missing round blew up my EAA Witness....

None of this is where I plan to be at the happy point, but it is what I can afford at the moment.

Probably a ridiculous amount.

If considering handgun and rifle ammo combined... Definitely a ridiculous amount.

In December 2012, I had no more than two or three boxes of ammo for each of the firearms I own and maybe a case of shotgun shells for bird hunting.  The visual of big box retail sporting good stores with empty ammunition shelves, playing out again, again and again, everywhere I travelled for the following year is indelibly etched in my mind.

I'm awake now and I'm determined never to be caught that exposed again.  So like Shadow, probably overstocked.  However, back to original question:  Let's just call it enough  ;)

I'm not into FMJ ammo because sometimes my magazines are loaded with practice ammo (plated HP) and sometimes they wind up getting carried.  I really don't know how these would perform in expansion it my calibers, but it would certainly do better than hard nose bullets.

I have 300 rounds of plated HP in 9mm loaded and ready.

I have about 500 rounds of plated HP in 10mm

For my carry ammo in 9mm, I have just short of 200 rounds.

For 10mm I have a variety of defense capable rounds, perhaps 500 total rounds.

I can make a few thousand rounds with supplies on hand.

I also have 10-15k rimfire rounds, a couple hundred shotshells, and a mix of other centerfire rounds in quite a few different calibers, and enough supplies to make a couple thousand more.

Since I have gotten my stock pile built up, it seems that range time has been hard to come by.  Go figure!

If we are gonna add in practice ammo and components..I generally try to keep 1-2K rounds loaded, and I have about 10 lbs of powders that would work in 10mm, majority Blue Dot, but also Longshot, AA#9 and unique.  I have between 5 and 10K primers on hand, and generally have 500-1000 lbs of lead I can cast.  Primers would be the gating factor so, at any given time I could probably shoot 10K rounds before I ran out of ability to make more.

Defensive rounds, have about 3000. They are about half Double Tap from the mid-2000s and half Underwood. Each is split between Gold Dot and XTP. And about two hundred rounds of 200-220gr hardcast since I live in black bear territory.   I'm getting another 500 rounds of Underwood 200gr XTP and call it good for defense ammo.

I've been using Georgia Arms for practice/training.  Good practice ball ammo.

I'm new to the forums, hi all.

Defensive ammo, well let's see.  In 10mm I have 500 rounds of Double Tap 135 gr. JHP's, and a couple of hundred of various other brands and grain weights,
In .45 ACP I have about 1,500 rounds of 230 gr. Golden Sabers, and about 500 rounds of 185 gr. +P Golden Sabers, and 700 rounds of 185 gr. +P Hydra Shoks, and
In 9mm I have 500 rounds of the famous Federal 9BPLE 115 gr. +P+ JHP's, 200 rounds of Buffalo Bore 115 gr. +P+, 200 rounds of Buffalo Bore 115 gr. +P, and abour 400 rounds of various other brands of JHP's all light grain wt. +P and +P+ stuff.

So, that's about 4,700 rounds of hollow points total.  I think I'm running a bit low.  Might have to order some more.  That's not counting the approx. 26,000 rounds of FMJ practice ammo I have in those three calibers.  I too am determined not to get caught in another 18 month long shortage when everyone and their brother goes into panic buying mode each time a democrat says "gun control."  I shoot about two to three times a week and about 200 rounds per range session so I shoot it up fast.  I buy more as I use it to keep the supply up in the event of another panic buying induced shortage.  After having been through two of them in the current admininistration I have learned my lesson.

Guns are icky. I sold all my guns.

If I did have guns, I'd probably have about a dozen mags for the ARs filled with PPU 75 gr BTHP but I might change that soon to 65 gr Sierra Game King hand loads. I'd probably have two or three mags each for a G27, G23, and G22 filled with 180 gr Gold Dot. I'd probably have one magazine for the 10mm Witness loaded with 165 gr Gold Dot and another loaded with 200 gr XTP.
