That's a loaded question  ;D

You can't really rank them. The reason why is because when they were pushed by the Underwood's, DoubleTap's, SwampFox, etc... some of the platforms showed their weak areas (complaints/issues) and just about all of them backed off to calm the storms.

At this time Underwood is still about the top with a second place tie between Buffalo Bore and PBR Ammo.

OK, here is the "rest of the story" behind my question.  I currently use an H&K USP 45acp compact for my tactical training.  I like the 45 and shoot the H&K USP well tactically.

However,  I am thinking about POSSIBLY switching over to the 10mm throughout my inventory (as I am just obsessed with the 10's stopping power).  However, the really hot 10's like Underwood would give me (at best) poor follow up times and push the accuracy envelope of double-taps.  On the other hand, some of the 10mm "range" rounds I have tried "seem" fairly mild out of my Glock 20 G4 such as Prograde Range in 10mm.

Soooooooooo, I was wondering IF I were to switch to an "all 10mm" strategy using my Glock 20 and potentially a future G29 in mild 10mm brands, are there "cool"/lite 10mm brands I could count on being consistently cool and thereby manageable for tactical training purposes??

Thanks,

Pat

For me, it's the past days of glory of Double Tap ammo.

When I discovered the 10mm, I didn't want to be affected by it being accepted or not. If the round fell out of favor, I wanted to have a lifetime's worth of defense rounds. So I bought a butt-load of DT 10mm ammo between 2005 to 2007.

Met specs, actual Gold Dot or XTP bullets, low flash powder, good brass, feeds perfectly in my guns. Why didn't the guy just keep doing what he was doing?

Today, the top is Underwood with no second place. With Buffalo Bore, you no longer know what components were used to make the rounds. One has to open the box to inspect the cartridge du jour.

For my next order of Underwood, I'm going to specify the OAL to match the original DT rounds.

I've trained with .40S&W, .45ACP and 10mm. For all those rounds, I role play, imagining a threat to self or family while moving, drawing and firing. You may be surprised, if one stays focused on the basics, the gun comes back for follow-up shots fast enough IMHO.

And when we train for multiple assailants, we give each a serving before re-fills. I personally like those servings to be 10mm. But, I have no issues with the .45ACP for defense against people.

My best expression of what a 10mm is like, is to shoot a 200gr .45ACP  +P.  Pick up some and see how you do with the HK.

Not having a chrony, that's all this will be, my opinion.  Of the different brands I have shot, hottest to coolest:

Underwood (All)
Winchester Silver Tips 175 gr
Hornady XTP 155 gr
Georgia Arms 155 gr
UMC 180 gr
Federal American Eagle 180 gr
Armscor 180 gr

I haven't shot any of the Freedom Munitions that I bought, but from one of Intercooler's posts, it will probably be down there with the American Eagle and Armscor.

I'm guessing so go easy on me if I'm wrong
1 Underwood
2 Buffalo Bore/Swamp Fox
3 Norma
4 Winchester 175 grain?

Well just for the info I have reviewed...

SwampFox/Underwood
Buffalo Bore
NORMA (original)
PBR
Double Tap (better in the early days)
Georgia Arms
Federal/Hornady/Winchester
The remainder could be lumped into pile
Ted Nugent, Remington, CCI, Speer, American Eagle, etc...

But there are many things to consider than just velocity numbers as bragging rights...we need to take into account the ammunition's purpose, ammo function and reliable feeding, clean burning powders, projectile's purpose (defensive, hunting , target, etc), accuracy, recoil kick & recovery, amount of flash, etc.

From what I read, PPU is the weakest 10mm: It is basically loaded to 40S&W velocities. It is also the cheapest @ ~$20/box.
