Underwood Ammo's "gold dot shortage" question

For almost a month I have called every week and asked when the 155 and 165 gr. 10mm Gold Dots will be in stock.  Each week I am told it will be the following week, including today I was told, "next week."  Don't get me wrong I love their products but was just wondering if there is a problem with Speer or if there are massive contracts that are sucking up all resources?  The 10mm 165 FMJ's have been out too.

Anyone know what's going on?  Double Tap does not seem to be having this issue with the 155/165gr. but I strongly prefer Underwood.

Unless I just missed it, haven't seen Underwood sell any 165 grain jhp gold dots this year.  I've been looking for him to load some for a long time too.  Recently broke down and sprung for a box of Double Tap gold dot 165gr cause got tired of waiting for Kevin's product.

Basicly the 165's were built and geared towards the 10mm performance levels...less companies were loading that weight in the 40S&W, which seem to be using the 155 & 180 grain loadings.

With the FBI going back to 9mm and many law enforcement agencies doing the same we will see a downturn in the 40S&W in the long run!  I pasted a link in the General Discussion section about the FBI's choice...

The 165 Gold Dots were great performers in 10mm.   

I wish they were making the Gold Dot in 200 grain for the 10mm handloaders.

I was just wondering if there is some infamous conspiracy theory here - you know, like FEMA buying up all of Underwood's stockpiles in the 155 and 165 gr. weights??   :'(   

Just trying to have a little fun.  I am going to be patient because I think these are likely best-in-class.

According to Nosler's sight, they will be releasing a Bonded JHP in the near future that is to be their version of the Gold Dot. Currently, their Sporting Handgun component is not bonded.

Midway has 165 gr gold dots available, you can load your own or wait for Underwood. I'm surprised more of you guys don't just load your own and save some money as well as having better more consistent ammo instead of buying so much expensive premium ammo.

There are number of really good reasons to hand load as well some good reasons why it's not
necessarily right solution for everyone.  This website is replete with pros & cons of each side
of the conversation.
Hopefully there's always room for both perspectives on this website.

The 10mm is a reloaders cartridge, I don't need to remind everyone that factory ammo is either watered down or expensive boutique stuff. Underwood is really good stuff probably the best and it's not as expensive as other boutique ammo, but it's not cheap either and more importantly it isn't always available.  You can invest $200 - $300 in reloading supplies or you can be at the mercy of a single small ammunition maker that may be gone tomorrow.  looking at the pull downs on this site there aren't any proprietary components used to make Underwood ammo. Buy yourself a # of IMR High Skor 800X some 165 grain Gold dots as well as some Starline brass and you're good to go. You might think I'm being a dick but I'm just giving you guys some good advice that you'll thank me for later.

No judgments being passed.  This is a forum for 10mm enthusiasts across a wide spectrum to promote and share info about a favored caliber.  While I respectfully disagree that the 10mm is a cartridge reserved exclusively for reloaders, certainly don't begrudge your enthusiasm for reloading 10mm nor your opinion and advice.

Heck, I even have dies for 7.62X54R which is about the cheapest ammo out there anymore, 22lr included it seems.

But if everyone who passes on 10mm because the factory ammo is expensive/watered down, bought one anyway, the market for 10mm ammo would be huge.

Nearly everyone I talk to, reading between the lines, agrees that the 10mm Auto is THE auto loaders cartrdige.  Small enough to fit in small packages.  Powerful enough to get it done.  Practice ammo can be easy to shoot.

But they all pass on what is one of the best, if not the best, auto loading handgun cartridges because it is perceived as a "reloader's round".  It is about 80% more than it should be.  But adding to the list of owners will nibble at the margin.  And someday we would have cheap ammo.

My hat is off to Underwood!  I appreciate that they keep the price low for premium loads when clearly the demand indicates the market would support a higher price.

Not everyone has the time or the environment to do the handloading and they are the ones who keep the ammo companies in business.  However handloaders can reap the most benefits from their ammo, by experiencing ammo that is of a quality they desire. 

From mild to wild, or economical ammo to totally custom precision ammo, the handloaders learn to work their magic for their needs and keeping themselves supplied.  They can select the components to assemble, that governs the performance to which they intend to do the task, be it paper target plinking or short range to long distance hunting.  I reloaded for my 10's since day one March of 1990. 

I will say that we see various new styles of bullets, jacketed, plated and solids, some are good and some are novelties in my opinion!  One thing is for certain, there are bullets out there for every occasion and application scenario.  Some as designed were geared towards the 40S&W performance levels, and some of those will cross over and allow performance even at the blistering speeds of the 10mm.

One thing I will say is, it is hard to beat the performance and economics of a quality cast bullets, be it solid or HP design.   

I only wish there would have been forums like these, when I started handloading in the 70's, where we could discuss the results and findings.

Speer gave them a problem about using the "Gold dot" brand name, so they have to say bonded JHP.
