I hope my first post is not over the top. I looked though all 20 pages in this forum but did not find anything specific to my question...

Recently I dusted off my .400 Cor-bon gear, loaded some ammo and fired my Glock 21 and a 1911 with conversion barrels. While the Cor-bon is an interesting concept I decided it might be time to go for a REAL 10 mm. A couple of years back I had some issues with an AR barrel from a respected AR manufacturer. It went back to the factory 3 times and finally went under the hammer - literally. I decided at that time "no more peasant guns!" So if I do a 10 mm it will be top shelf.

I started my search with Clark Custom Guns. I have two Clark 1911s in .45 ACP.  They do not do 10mm but they recommended Benny Hill at Triangle Shooting Sports. He does full race/space guns. Not what I am looking for.

I contacted Nighthawk Custom.  The Heinie long slide is close to what I want. The answers I got back did not inspire confidence. "Can you build one with a compensator?" answer "No, we do not have any threaded 10mm barrels."  I guess the do not have a lathe either nor can they find someone to operate it during the 1 - 2 years delivery time.

Then a real shocker. I contacted Les Baer Custom. I was told the no longer do 10 mm as they "could not get them to run 100%" and could not find reliable magazines! That is giving me some second thoughts.

I still need to contact Kimber's custom shop and Springfield Armory's custom shop. I was wondering what players I have overlooked. Here are my basic requirements:

Type: 1911, single stack
Material: stainless steel preferred, carbon steel OK
Barrel: 6" ramped (fully supported chamber) with compensator
Slide: 6"
Sights: adjustable target (Bomar style)
Trigger: long, adjustable for overtravel, 3.5 - 4#
Accuracy: 10 rounds < 3" at 50 yds from machine rest or better
Other bells and whistles ... to be determined

TIA,

Ken

Ken, welcome to the forum!  While you mention some great manufactures you left one out that quite possibly will provide you with what you are looking for and a very reasonable price point for quality.  That manufacture would be Fusion Arms.  They provide a product to your specifications if you want particular details.  Put your list of stuff together and call and or fax/e-mail them you info and let them price your gun the way you want it!

Everyone who has had the Fusion Arms guns have been delighted with price, workmanship and performance.  I don't have one but have considered the Fusion long slide hunter myself.

Nick E 10mm one of the members here and GT has one that has taken on some hunting duty.  I think Gandog56 also has one of the Fusion guns.

Hope you find what you are looking for and best regards,  :D

Thanks The_Shaddow,

I had looked at the Fusion Arms web site - at least a link someone provided me. I got the impression they sold kits and not completed firearms. I will look again. I looked again. Certainly a possibility.

I have an email to Springfield as I could not get the custom shop representative on the phone.

As to Kimber... a more thorough reading of their web site I learned
QuoteWe are unable to accommodate requests to build individual firearms to customer specifications. You are welcome to send back any Kimber pistol for upgrades to Custom Shop features.
Not sure if that means I can purchase a 5" in  .45 ACP and send it back to be stretched into a 6" 10 mm  :))

Thanks again,

Ken

I'd be careful of custom Kimber. Just seen posts. YMMV.

Dustin Bonar had some cool custom 1911's featured in American Handgunner a few years back.  At the time he was trying to get his own brand launched, Lightening Strike Technologies.

Most guys who have full size 1911's from Dustin seem happy with them.  But, reports indicate he didn't fare well making the transition from quality craftsman to businessman.  And some of the reviews of other work are not pretty at all.

If you can track Dustin down you might wanna talk to him and see if he is still doing 10mm builds.  I thought his Gaboon model looked very nice.  A conversation with him may shed some light on where his craftsmanship is now.

And certainly Fusion would be a good shop to chat with too.

You're certainly in the correct place for 10mm's, welcome aboard.

I don't know if they do 6" barrels or comp's but it wouldn't hurt to check with Dan Wesson. I had them make me a Custom 10mm Commander and I have to say that it's the best 1911 pattern gun that I've ever owned. Although it's not pictured in this post, the chamber/ramp is fully supported.

I'm not sure if Fusion Firearms will thread a barrel or not. But here's my 10mm long slide I had done.

Some people think I'm paranoid because I have so many guns. With all my guns, what do I have to be paranoid about?

The Dan Wesson Elite comes up for sale from time to time, and I guess it qualifies as 'high end' if price is the measure. I'd say there is generally one available at any given time at Gun Broker or GunsAmerica. I've only read comments from one owner, and I'd guess there are only 4 total owners worldwide :) but the comments were very positive. I seriously doubt anyone could spend that much on a toy and have anything other than positive comments, however. Fusion would be my choice, but only because of selection and online comments I've read from owners--I have not seen one first-hand.

Excellent choice,
Here is my review of that pistol from some years back along with the .460 Rowland.
